Derwent Onyx Pencils are made from smooth, dark graphite that delivers dense, rich, jet-black tones, even darker than Derwent's Graphic 9B pencil. Because of its non-crumbly texture, the wide, 4 mm core is capable of sharpening and holding a fine point, making these pencils great for expressive sketches, as well as detailed technical and architectural drawings.
Darker shades can be built up by applying increased pressure. Apply less pressure for lighter shades and more detailed artwork. These pencils can also be smudged and blended with your finger or a tortillon.
Derwent Onyx Pencils are available in two tones, Medium and Dark.

I draw a lot in graphite, but could never get things quite dark enough without scratching my paper. These Derwent Onyx pencils sure filled the bill. Their application is smooth and even and very easily blended. Great product!!

So Far So Good
Am used to working with water-soluble graphite and chose this pencil to give me a dark unsmudged line. I love how the tone varies with my pressure and was able to achieve a really dark black by dipping it in water in the midst of drawing. I expected the lead to soften but it held together and kept its point. It's now part of my regular kit.

I use it for graphite drawings. It's a good dark pencil, but NOT really darker than a #9B (which is why I bought it). Still, I wanted it and am happy that I have it.

good for what it is
This like a derwent version of the ebony. That being said, don't expect jet black. You can get a good variety of dark tones without all the smudging of a higher b pencil.Good for what you get, but don't expect jet black, get carbon or charcoal for that

I use this for everyone of my drawings that I make
The BEST pencil for sketching
Onyx pencils are fantastic! I have tried all the major brands and I find these are the absolute best for sketching. You can get an amazing variety of tones ranging from 6H to 9B in a single pencil, all depending on the amount of pressure you apply as you draw. This is a graphite pencil, so naturally the darkest dark isn't a "midnight black", but it's no lighter than the darkest graphite tones I've seen in any other brand. A must have for every serious pencil artist.

Onyx seems to refer to the paint coating

Not sure where the "jet-black tones" are supposed to come into play with this pencil, as advertised. The marketing hype said "jet-black tones" and that's what I was expecting. Maybe something like a mix of graphite and carbon???? What I got was gray graphite. Nothing better or worse than Cretacolor. The only onyx in this pencil is in the black color of the paint on the outside. Good pencil for what it is, just be aware you are NOT getting "jet-black tones."

The BEST sketching pencils
Fantastic pencils! Wonderful variety of tones. Unlike any other pencil on the market. I highly recommend them.
