Welcome to dickblick
Derwent Inktense Pencils are as versatile as watercolor pencils, but with a firmer texture that allows them to perform with the brilliant intensity of traditional pen-and-ink. These pencils are available in strong, vibrant colors which work beautifully on their own or can be mixed together to create rich, subtle tones. The pure, clean colors are perfect for bold expressive drawings, including fashion illustration, landscapes, greeting cards, and more.
Inktense pencils can be used dry for rich, intense color or washed out with a little water to create a vivid translucent effect. Once dry, the color is permanent and can be worked over with other media. Pencils are pre-sharpened.

The Best Watersoluble Medium This Amateur Has Used
By The Perpetual Novice
Disclaimer: I'm not a professional artist. I'm just a hobbyist with a wild-eyed obsession with art supplies. That being said, the only thing I regret about buying these Derwent Inktense pencils is that I didn't buy a set right off the bat. I bought two pencils just to try the brand out: one Ink Black and one Cadmium Orange. I used them to color in an inked line drawing of (what else) a pumpkin, applying the pigment dry, then going back in with a water brush. I also picked up some pigment directly off the pencil, so you can do that too with pretty good results. Conclusions? Inktense is a very aptly named line: the color lays down smoothly, and when water's added the vibrancy sustains/increases, rather than diminishing like typical watercolor pencils seem to do. For those of you worrying about blending, it didn't seem to be an issue for me, and I don't even really know what I'm doing yet. I've seen what true artists can do with these things, and you can get some amazing results.A warning: I've read and heard elsewhere that because Inktense is technically an ink pencil, it dries permanent and can't be reactivated like watercolor pencils might. I've never tried it myself, but it's something to think about and do some research on if you're not sure. If you're unsure of the medium, you can always try a couple individuals like I did - my bet is that you won't regret it.
This set is absolutely amazing. I love the portability as well as the quite of the inktense colors. They are easy to manipulate and the colors are brilliant. I use them as a pencil to draw area's in then use a brush to wet the area with water for magical blending. I also use them as ink where I dab my wet brush on the pencil them dab color onto my artwork. There's a wide range of colors and they store nicely in the tin. I've made a color chart and the inks turn out much more vibrant than you can imagine. They're perfect for taking out to the field because all you need is paper, a brush, a dab of water and an eraser! I don't have any negatives on this product but truly they are much higher rated than 5. I'd give them a 100! Try them. You won't be disappointed! The price was extremely reasonable from Dickinson Blick's!!!

The wide range of colors will allow me to shade fabrics for more realistic appliques. The colors are deep and run nicely when wet. Very happy with the product

I am a life-long professional artist and adult art teacher. There is just no other water-soluble color pencil that comes even close. The name tells the story, they are bright, bold and hold those qualities when water is used. These pencils are exciting and versatile! With only a little experimentation you can create any hue by blending colors, and you can achieve any value by using various quantities of water. They are a perfect addition to mixed media projects. After purchasing the 12 pencil set, I moved up to a 36 color set!

Great new medium for those who are looking for bright vivid colors. Go down like a watercolor only better because once dry they are permanent. Easy to use and once dry allows for many layers to be laid down. Even light over dark, and you can achieve different levels of opacity by varying water amount. Medium is a wonderful addition to your collection. Many wonderful colors come included and ability to mix them with other colors in set opens up many more. Great buy and recommend to all!

Haven't stopped drawing and painting since I got my new 36 piece set last week. I had a sneaking suspicion these pencils whould be good because the sets of 72 were already sold out. I debated on waiting, but when the ideas hit an artist has to go with it and create. Now I know I have to order the big set, but in the mean-time I have something to doodle with. My love afair with watercolor pencils and polychromos will suffer greatly now that I have finally found the One that can do both.

The color produced by these ink pencils are so superior to watercolor pencils, I love using them in my journaling and cards that I make. I bought the 24 pencil set which has a good variety of colors but at Dick Blick's prices, I'm just sorry I didn't get a larger set.Thank you
LOVE these pencils!
These colored/watercolor pencils are amazing! They have a soft enough lead to easily blend colors, but do not easily break. If blending isn't your thing, you may be interested in buying a larger set of these so you can get a better deal as well as receive a larger assortment of colors. The colors are beautiful when using just to color in coloring books or drawing, but when you add water the colors become so intense and vivid, they look more like a heavy ink wash rather than watercolors! I originally bought these pencils for myself, but then I had to go back and buy them as gifts for my daughter and other art enthusiasts in my circle of friends as gifts. The price is high (even on sale they seem to be more expensive than other high quality brands like Prisma), so if you're looking for color pencils to color adult coloring books I would go for something less expensive, but if you're an artist and like to draw, use pen and ink, paint, etc., these are worth every penny!
