Welcome to dickblick
Derwent Inktense Pencils are as versatile as watercolor pencils, but with a firmer texture that allows them to perform with the brilliant intensity of traditional pen-and-ink. These pencils are available in strong, vibrant colors which work beautifully on their own or can be mixed together to create rich, subtle tones. The pure, clean colors are perfect for bold expressive drawings, including fashion illustration, landscapes, greeting cards, and more.
Inktense pencils can be used dry for rich, intense color or washed out with a little water to create a vivid translucent effect. Once dry, the color is permanent and can be worked over with other media. Pencils are pre-sharpened.

We have the whole family coloring with Inkyense pencils
from Cazenovia, NY
Comments about Derwent Inktense Pencils:
At Christmas this year, we spent a lot of time coloring. Me (grandma), the purchaser of the pencils, my daughter, daughter-in-law and 41/2 year old granddaughter. The Inktense pencils were a hit, particularly when used with a water pen to blend them! I had to buy more so everyone had their own set.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

love my new inktense pencils

I have wanted these pencils for a long time. The after Christmas pricing was too good to pass up so they were a gift to myself. I have swatched them and used them to color several art journal and coloring book pages. Very glad I got them.
"Intense" is the Word

So far I am just experimenting with these pencils to use as background for my regular Faber-Castel Polychromos but I may have to expand this idea. They apply very smoothy, just as a dry pencil but the WOW factor is when you apply the water to them. The color explodes with intensity. The only drawback I can see so far is there is no erasing this once it's wetted. This is a very interesting middle ground between the control of pencils and watercolor painting. Should be lots of fun.

There is a significant difference between Derwent's Inktense and watercolor pencils. When you add water, Inktense produces ink not watercolor paint. Once this has dried, the ink is waterproof rather than remaining water-soluble with watercolor. This means you can additional layers to your painting without disturbing what you've already done. As I mostly use acrylics, and thus am accustomed to being able to add to a painting without reactivating what's underneath, I do like this. I've found with watercolor pencils I sometimes end up muddying the colors by overworking, but with Inktense once it's dry, it's dry. That said, it's important to note that if you don't 'activate' all the Inktense pencil the first time you apply water, you may have some pencil left that will dissolve the next time you apply water. It depends on how heavily you applied the pencil and how much water you use.As with all water-soluble pencils, you can put a wet brush onto an Inktense pencil or stick to pick up some ink and then brush this onto paper.

I am very pleased with the product. I have been using the pencils on fabric art and the colors are great. I will be buying a few of the intense blocks.
Bought only one of these in Shiraz to use for quick monochrome sketches and I love it. The intensity of the "ink" was impressive. Perfect for using a waterbrush with on the go.

Very nice colors on fabric. More intense on fabric than crayons. And the pencil can color smaller areas than a crayon. I used aloe gel (clear, no lidocane, color, etc) to set the color instead of water, which wicked outside the design area too much. That worked great. Textile fabric medium was not available locally that I found, so aloe gel was perfect. The gel was easy to control and paint in even tiny areas with a small brush. I let the gel dry and rinsed in water. No bleeding or wicking.

just started using and wish I'd bought a bigger set. Love the pigment color you get when using these pencils and blocks.
Beautiful bold colors
I use them to color/ paint. The color is intense and bold, but blends beautifully.
