Derwent Inktense Blocks bring a new sense of freedom to the drawing and painting experience. They are watersoluble ink blocks that can be used dry or wet.

Dry, they deliver pure, vibrant color. When wet, they create a translucent ink-like paint that can be worked over when dry.

Their chunky shape makes them extremely versatile. Use them dry to apply fine lines or broad strokes directly to the paper. Wet, they can be used like pans of paint, dipped in water to apply color directly to the paper, or applied to wet paper for instant, intense color.

Inktense Blocks are ideal for loose, expressive landscapes and colorful still life paintings. They can also be used for rubber stamping, decoupage, or on fabric to create stunning silk paintings and quilts. They also combine beautifully with Derwent Inktense Pencils.

I have loved the Inktense pencils, and now love the blocks. They were worth waiting for (backorder) and arrived in perfect condition. The block form gives me freedom to make broad strokes or use with a brush for detailed application. The properties of easy dissolution, great color saturation and permanence after drying make this an especially versatile product - perfect for journal or mixed media use, and - with the convenient tin - a boon for travel. I also purchased the grate'n'shake to use the Inktense for silk painting.

This is the woodless version of the Derwent Inktense pencils. Everything the product descritption says is accurate. The colors are bright, the sticks can be used wet or dry. If used wet they create a permanent ink line or wash which will not lift if painted over with further layers. It's a good product if you need a permanent ink for drawing or wash.

Pros: bright concentrated colors, marks dissolve easily, ink comes in permanent colors that are easy to mix, they work well for mixed media projects or on their own

Cons: Breakable and fragile. Mine arrived with half the sticks broken, and continued to break when used for drawing. Also, they disolve at the least touch of water, so you need to be aware that the sticks will melt quickly if gripped with damp fingers or placed on even a slightly damp surface. As the stains are permanent, this can be a real disadvantage unless you work in a very neat and meticulous manner - unlike me. I didn't think it was worth buying the Inktense gripper sold as an accessory, but now I would advise getting one.

Bottom line: This is another quality product from Derwent. I'm neutral about recommending Inktense in this format. I ordered the sticks versus pencils because I hate sharpening pencils, but for me the pencils would have been a better choice because of the breakage and staining problems with the sticks. Some people might not be bothered, so it just depends on your personal style.
