Derwent Inktense Blocks bring a new sense of freedom to the drawing and painting experience. They are watersoluble ink blocks that can be used dry or wet.
Dry, they deliver pure, vibrant color. When wet, they create a translucent ink-like paint that can be worked over when dry.
Their chunky shape makes them extremely versatile. Use them dry to apply fine lines or broad strokes directly to the paper. Wet, they can be used like pans of paint, dipped in water to apply color directly to the paper, or applied to wet paper for instant, intense color.
Inktense Blocks are ideal for loose, expressive landscapes and colorful still life paintings. They can also be used for rubber stamping, decoupage, or on fabric to create stunning silk paintings and quilts. They also combine beautifully with Derwent Inktense Pencils.

Comments about Derwent Inktense Blocks:
Love using these to color sticks with water for intensity of color. Not great for detailing, but great for outdoor sketching and quick studies. Fun colors and fun blending.

My favorite art tool ever!!!!
These are the best!!! I am in love with these blocks and pencils! Grateful to be able to afford the 72 set and the variety of colors is fabulous. I prefer to use these like watercolor pans and leave them right in the tin and run a wet brush over them. They are super pigmented and if I want more pigment I can go over the wet painted area directly with the block coordinating pencil. They are luminous and I love the fact that once dry, they don't move like traditional watercolor so you can layer colors over each other and still have the crisp design underneath. These are wonderful and my most favorite art supply that I couldn't live without! These and the pencils. I'm currently working on a fabric piece for an art quilt. On fabric, I use clear aloe vera gel to keep the color from bleeding. There is nothing on the market that gives you better and intense true color on fabric than inktense!! So glad I can replace singles of my favorite colors here at dickblick!!

I would not buy this product again
Sticks break without much pressure and have gritty consistency. Not really good as a dry color stick and not great watercolor quality. I love the idea - but the application and quality did not win me over.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I have just started to experiment with these blocks.
I've just started experimenting as I have a set of the intense ink in pencils and thought the blocks would cover more area quicker. I'm guessing they work better on paper with tooth. I've been using gessobord and the blocks crumble and break. Also, I've found that you must absolutely dissolve it with water or it looks like crayon. I do like the thin ink washes, though.
These are good if there is a lot of "ground" to cover
A great product! strong colors

I do a lot of Landscapes, both Chinese style, and Southwest style. They are perfect and the Chinese Ink block is very nice!

Strong Pigmentation for good price
from New Orleans
I'm looking for stuff that operates LIKE watercolor pigment, but that can be carried around like a crayon, and can be used as a drawing implement. Thanks to the great staff at Blick and a long interaction with them via email, and thanks to my local stores as well, I've had the opportunity to compare a LOT of products that purport to be sticks of water-soluble pigment. Well, mostly, they brush around a little bit but they don't BLEED and DIFFUSE and GRANULATE or what-not else like actual tube watercolor does. Even so-called "sticks of watercolor pigment" (Blick offers these both in Daniel Smith and Winsor & Newton) don't really act like the same pigment from the same manufacturer. The best I've found is Inktense by Derwent, which does somewhat bleed and diffuse like watercolors if you get a bit of a sense of the density of the crayon while using it, and lay it onto the page in a more brush-stroke-y manner and less like a preschool playroom waxy crayon.
Derwent blocks are great to work with, though you may find that your fingers can pick up the graphite or colored pigment. And no one wants accidental smudges on their artwork. The solution is Derwent Block Grippers! The Grippers are a soft rubber that slide onto the block which makes for comfortable handling and clean hands. The Grippers fit on all Derwent blocks including graphite, charcoal, pastel and Inktense.
