Derwent Inktense Blocks bring a new sense of freedom to the drawing and painting experience. They are watersoluble ink blocks that can be used dry or wet.
Dry, they deliver pure, vibrant color. When wet, they create a translucent ink-like paint that can be worked over when dry.
Their chunky shape makes them extremely versatile. Use them dry to apply fine lines or broad strokes directly to the paper. Wet, they can be used like pans of paint, dipped in water to apply color directly to the paper, or applied to wet paper for instant, intense color.
Inktense Blocks are ideal for loose, expressive landscapes and colorful still life paintings. They can also be used for rubber stamping, decoupage, or on fabric to create stunning silk paintings and quilts. They also combine beautifully with Derwent Inktense Pencils.

Strong Pigmentation for good price
from New Orleans
I'm looking for stuff that operates LIKE watercolor pigment, but that can be carried around like a crayon, and can be used as a drawing implement. Thanks to the great staff at Blick and a long interaction with them via email, and thanks to my local stores as well, I've had the opportunity to compare a LOT of products that purport to be sticks of water-soluble pigment. Well, mostly, they brush around a little bit but they don't BLEED and DIFFUSE and GRANULATE or what-not else like actual tube watercolor does. Even so-called "sticks of watercolor pigment" (Blick offers these both in Daniel Smith and Winsor & Newton) don't really act like the same pigment from the same manufacturer. The best I've found is Inktense by Derwent, which does somewhat bleed and diffuse like watercolors if you get a bit of a sense of the density of the crayon while using it, and lay it onto the page in a more brush-stroke-y manner and less like a preschool playroom waxy crayon.
I use them on fabric and love them.
Use on fabric for shading.
I draw in pen and ink and this product works well with it.
Fun to have in my studio

Used with the Inktence pencils in mixed media application. Loved working with both. Excited to try on fabric. Will be teaching a watercolor workshop next spring to art quilters. Nice to have these in my toolbox.

Loads of color and texture fun!
By Yachtie M
I haven't had a chance to use these very much yet, but I am having fun. They do offer a lot of potential for paper and fabric canvases. I like that they are similar to water color and yet also so much more diverse. The colors are deep and mix well. The color white can be applied to some extent on top of other colors including dark ones too. It is possible to make clean, clear washes as well as texture via the use of water spritzer on drawing, grating over wet area, stamping with plastic or other stuff too, etc. you can use them dry on dry, dry on wet and wet on wet. See attached photos.

I colored areas on fabric that was then made into a quilted wall hanging. The piece was a rooster in front of a barn. The piece took 1st place in the quilt challenge. The colors were brilliant and very easy to use and blend. When used with fabric medium, the colors are permanent.

This is before completion but I was already liking
Derwent blocks are great to work with, though you may find that your fingers can pick up the graphite or colored pigment. And no one wants accidental smudges on their artwork. The solution is Derwent Block Grippers! The Grippers are a soft rubber that slide onto the block which makes for comfortable handling and clean hands. The Grippers fit on all Derwent blocks including graphite, charcoal, pastel and Inktense.
