Welcome to dickblick
Featuring a beautiful, creamy consistency, these triangular bars of solid, highly pigmented color offer artists unlimited creative potential.
Derwent Artbars feel luxuriously smooth as they release consistently rich, deep pigment. The wax-based bars are also completely watersoluble and perfect for expressive pieces that include different marks and textures. Suitable for large, dramatic pieces containing lively marks and shapes, Artbars also adapt well to adding finer detail because of their triangular shape.
Derwent understands the importance of different tones, and the Artbar color range reflects that, with colors arranged in four tonal groups: Brights, Pales, Earths, and Darks.
Brights provide the best base color for a subject, handy for vivid flowers and exciting abstract work. Pales are lighter shades that bring out highlights, perfect for portraits. Earths offer the mid-tones of an image, ideal for natural landscapes. Darks reveal the important shadow tones, great for mixing even more tints. Each Artbar displays a symbol denoting its tonal group for easy reference.
Dry or wet, Artbar opens up a world of expressive mark-making and rich opaque color.
Artbars measure 3-¾" long, with triangular edges that are ¼" long.

The Spritzer is a useful tool for spraying water over your Artbar marks. To dampen your work instead of dipping your brush in water, spray from a long distance and mist over larger areas. Or you can get in close and spray into color lines to make the pigments disperse.

Handle with Care

Comments about Derwent Artbar Sets and Accessories:
My main critique of Derwent Artbars is how fragile they are. I love water-soluble media of all kinds, especially crayons, but Derwent should consider reshaping these bars into watercolor pans. I was excited to try out my set, and began with doing color swatches and just some experimenting: laying them down dry and washing over with a brush, scribbling them over a wet surface, etc. Before I had a chance to create any actual artwork, the Artbars had fallen apart, and all I have now is a beautiful set of crumbly, broken chunks of color. (And it's not climate; I live in NY, and it was winter when I got these!)Maybe they'd retain their integrity better if you avoid water--which defeats the point of their water-solubility!--but even that is doubtful. A few bars broke apart when I merely removed one section of the wrapper! On the plus side, the colors are very opaque and rich. Derwent is a great brand (love their other media, like the drawing pencils), and I don't doubt their quality, but ironically, it may be that these Artbars do more filler to make them usable. Meantime, my favorite water-soluble crayon is still the Caran d'Ache Neocolor II.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I'm in love.
By Emily Who Wishes She Had Artistic Talent
For me, these were a significant expense -- I was so intrigued by the idea that I wanted a big set to explore the concept with. So -- not a bargain at all. BUT so worth it. I am loving these weird wonderful inventions that let you establish solid shapes and boundaries and then play with the concreteness of the image to any degree you please. Such an awesome invention.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I traveled with this product which was very easy as it is compact and non toxic. Sketching with the bars is fun and easy but the magical part is when you touch a wet brush to the marks and the crayon spreads in interesting and lovely ways. I have posted some work on Facebook mentioning the product as I want other artists to try this material. It is, I believe, always beneficial for artists to play with something other than their usual tools!

Falls apart too easily
Good pigment load and rich colors, but one drop of water and they quickly turn to mush and/or just break into pieces. The set I bought is now a collection of colorful waxy bits, which are totally useless unless I feel like finger painting on a rainy, humid day or simply dissolving them in water to make watercolor. I'm going back to my Neocolor IIs...

I really really love these artbars. They are so great on watercolor paper!!! I use these to do backgrounds on canvas, paper, etc. So awesome!! I bought the full set when it was on sale. They aren't as pigmented as the caran dache neocolor 2's but they don't have the leftover lines when you wet it like you do with the neocolor 2's. The artbars are great for making wash type of effects. I have really been enjoying these for backgrounds and the product is excellent. I can't say enough how awesome they are. I used them to do a bokah style background and I really liked how it turned out.

Need to practice more with these bars. I am new to watercolor painting and these bars are very interesting to use, but I like them and look forward to using them more.

Colors are very vibrant, but learning curve on using thes. I am a beginner watercolor hobbyist and these are a little different for me to use. However, I love the colors and possibilities and look forward to using them. Am a fan of this brand.

Disappointed, but not in Derwent
By Bug lady

I use Derwent inktense pencils, and when I saw a really good price on a set of Derwent's 72 artbars, I was really excited. These are five star art supplies in my studio, but they arrived in poor condition, poor packaging, broken ends of artbars, pretty much a mess. But, since I had wrestled with FedEx and the local post office over this package, I am using them, and they are just as good as I thought. I did buy them to go along with my pencils and to expand my horizons and size of my projects in many ways. They are great wet or dry, or grated and mixed with water. You tube offers amazing demos, so check them out. Since this was a big purchase for me, I am determined to get a lot out of them. They seriously do not disappoint, and are improving my techniques because of their quality. I cannot buy a set like this without driving a long distance, so I am pleased, but would have liked them in better shape to start out with.
