Aquatone Woodless Watercolor Sticks are amazingly versatile and have four times more useable color than a woodcased version!
These solid sticks of pure, watersoluble color can be used wet or dry. You can use them for fine detail work, as well apply broad sweeps of color in seconds. Or, simply peel off the protective wrapper and apply Aquatone on its side for even faster color laydown.

No messy pencil lines
from Washington, PA
Comments about Derwent Aquatone Woodless Watercolor Sticks:
I use these for sketching when I don't want to see pencil lines. They provide good under color, they're lightfast, good for details, and they blend well with other watercolors. Inasmuch as they were on clearance I suspect they are being discontinued so I stocked up on a few colors I use most. These sticks contain a lot of pigment and will last me a long time. The price was good.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Fabulous Watercolor Pencils
from Virginia, USA
These woodless pencils are fabulous! These were purchased as a gift for a 51yo male. He has not put them down since he received them. Now THAT is a great gift! One of the things he enjoys is the woodlessness of the pencils. He can draw and fill in landscapes or large areas of maps or backgrounds or whatever using any side or point of the pencil. It gives a great range of mark options, and from what I've seen of his work with them, a great range of value.

A Great Choice for Watercolor Pencil
from Portland, OR
What I love:Great value for high quality color - each pencil is easily equivalent to 2 or 3 regular wood-covered brands!Open Stock availability of a good variety of colorsVersatility in use - can be sharpened for fine lines or broken/cut and peeled for broad strokes of color; every shaved bit of the pencil when sharpened is useable!Compatible with any water-soluble mediaI'd like to see even more colors available!
Not blissed about these
from monterey, california
Love using watercolour pencils which give me the drawing and the wash features. Ordered Derwent and Cretacolour and Stabilo. Derwent seemed most waxy and less flowing than the others and would now be my last pick. The Stabilo is my favorite, though they dissolve too easily to dip and draw without affecting the core. They remain my favorite due to the fantastic non-waxy wash and ease of drawing. SOmwhat like using a charcoal pencil, but melds into fluid paint with the addition of the water by brush.

Great Colors, Poor Laydown
By Drawing enthusiast
from Ojai, CA
A great fan of Derwent watercolor pencils, I purchased a set of Derwent Aquatones because of their superior lightfastness ratings, especially for pink and red shades. I am very pleased with the selection of colors in the 24 stick set. However, the sticks are quite hard, and do not lay down as smoothly as the Derwent watercolor pencils. They are a bit scratchy when used dry. When I wet the strokes with an aquabrush, they do not dissolve instantly like strokes of a Derwent or Caran D'Arche watercolor pencil. Instead, the moistened strokes are grainy. I am experimenting with different grounds to see if this will help on the laydown. Does anyone have suggestions on this?

These watercolor sticks save me time.
from Detroit, Michigan
The watercolor sticks are great for areas that need highlighting, especially the very dark or very light colors. In small areas, one coat of watercolor stick replaces 5 or 6 small and careful washes of regular watercolor.

The BEST watercolor medium I've used!
from Juneau, AK
They might seem a bit pricey, BUT the rewards make these a watercolor medium that is impossible to beat. They are pure color, no wood casing, & this is the real magic of these sticks! The consistency is somewhere between a soft pencil and crayon-type medium which only lays down the amount of color you want, depending on the pressure you use, which I find VERY controllable, unlike watercolor paint which goes everywhere and is hard to control. I have used every kind of watercolor pencils, but I have never been able to find the ability to get different types of coverage I want from very light to very dark with just a pencil tip. I can be a messy artist and heavy-handed when I really want color, which always breaks the tips of every pencil I've ever tried, not to mention making heavy lines that do not wash evenly or completely when trying to blend. Not the effect I want.I love adding watercolor washes to my inked or penciled drawings. This is how I use these sticks: the first thing I did when I opened them is cut off the tips just below the bar code. I then broke these tips into two different size pieces so I can use the SIDES of them for gorgeous sweeping color. I then sharpened the remaining sticks (still a substantial length!) so I now have "pencil" sticks as well as smaller pieces for LOTS of color over large areas. This is impossible to accomplish with regular pencils! The colors are beautiful and these sticks make watercolor art SO much more controllable for me. I will never use another watercolor medium now that I've found these sticks of pure color. They travel well and with a couple of waterbrushes, a pencil and some india ink pens I can go anywhere and create beautiful art with a very small number of easily transported supplies. If you love the look of watercolor washes but haven't found a controllable way to add color to your drawings, try these. I struggled with pencils and paints for years until finding these gems. Now I will never use any other watercolor medium!

Line and wash drawings made easier!
from beautiful MADISON WI
What it does: water soluble pencil that can be used as a drawing or wash medium. This is great when you want to keep supplies to a minimum, as in travel sketching. How I use it: Wet and/or dry on 100 or 140 LB watercolor paper. Also in art journals and sketchbooks. I use these for line drawings where the line is emphasized and the washes are used to create shadows and value changes. I've been testing various water soluble drawing products, such as neocolor II and Lyra crayons, Cretacolor water soluble oil pastels, watercolor pencils, etc. Compared to the crayons, these do not dissolve as quickly and smoothly, but that is an advantage when you want to preserve the lines of your drawing, while also disolving some of the color for blending or a wash effect. What I like: The colors blend well with each other, and with other water media. Color is concentrated, so sticks last a long time. Dry colors aren't spectacular, but become richer when used with water. The pencils can hold a very fine point for detail drawing, but you can use the sides to apply larger areas of color very quickly. The dry drawings look very like hard pastel, but don't smear or create dust. NO WOOD TO SHARPEN! These are sold in open stock, so you can replace your favorites. What I don't like: Nothing really. The range of colors isn't huge, but these are easy to blend so it's not a big deal.Bottom line: Versatile product that's easy to use and gives you loads of color for the money.
