Welcome to dickblick
Have you ever been sketching and wanted to cover a large area quickly? Or wanted to variegate the tone very subtly, similar to using watercolors? Derivan Liquid pencil is capable of all these things and more.
An innovative new product that allows artists to create authentic graphite pencil effects with a liquid, Derivan Liquid Pencil can be easily thinned with water to allow for the softest colors to be applied with a brush, nib, or other art tools.
Because of its precisely balanced formulation, the Permanent formula "burnishes up" like traditional graphite but won’t smudge. The Rewettable formula allows for removal with water or an eraser, similar to watercolor techniques. Large areas also can be covered quickly and easily.
Derivan Liquid Pencil is available in six graphite shades. Each shade has a definite graphite color; however, there are distinct undertones such as Blue, Yellow, Red, Sepia, and neutral Grey in two different strengths to allow artists a great range of options.
Liquid Pencil Set
This set contains 6, 12 ml rewettable tubes and 6, 12 ml permanent tubes, one each of every color in the Derivan Liquid Pencil line, including the following: Gray #3, Gray #9, Sepia, Yellow, Red, and Blue.

New Medium is Fantastic
from Neenah, WI
Comments about Derivan Liquid Pencil:
I use liquid pencil with water colors and also with pen and ink sketches. At times, a combination of all three, which has become popular with buyers in my market. My interest came from watching Sterling Edwards video on Blicks website.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Derivan Liquid Pencil
from Hebron, CT
I have been a fan of Derivan products for years, and have been very positive about the Derivan Liquid Pencil product which I first saw demonstrated a number of years ago. I have done some of my best work using this product. Yet it is very difficult to get as a stock item in a "bricks and mortar" store. With Blick's on-line availability and fast delivery I'm all set !!
Can't wait to try this. Looks like fun.

This is new to me but I love it allready so smooth and shadeing is a lot easier than I thought, Thanks for a great product.

The liquid form lays out much like watercolor in a tube. All the colors in the set have a graphite base and a kind of weathered look that I find cool.

Beware of the material drying in bottle.
from Los Angeles, CA
I saw this item at a local store, and I liked the idea of a liquid pencil where you can paint it like watercolor but still have the benefits and looks of a pencil. When I first bought it, the material seemed to have potential. The non-permanent one (which is the one I have) does seem to erase, but with an electric eraser-- not so much with a regular eraser. Still, I was willing to give it a shot until I opened the bottle after a few months of not using it and the stuff had pretty much dried out. I will try reviving the paste by adding water to the bottle, but I am not very impressed with the product. It has potential, but the implementation of the product is not great. Also, it is definitely over-priced.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Should be sold only in tubes
from Denver, Colorado
I tried both the permanent version of this product (in a bottle) and the boxed set, with rewettable and permanent tubes. As others users have commented, the permanent version fairly soon dried up in the plastic bottle and was no longer usable. The tube version of the product lasted longer. They should sell this only in tubes.I find that as a liquid watercolor (the rewettable version) or acrylic paint (the permanent one) this is OK, but you can find better quality products: either the Daniel Smith (tube) watercolor, or the Art Graph (pan) if you want a good quality watercolor graphite. If you prefer a good acrylic tube graphite, Golden has a good graphite acrylic paint. The only advantage of the Derivan product is that, unlike the Daniel Smith, Art Graph or Golden, it offers a choice of different color variations (sepia, blue, etc.). On the other hand, you can easily mix the Daniel Smith graphite watercolor with a bit of another color to create tinted graphite watercolors, or do the same with other acrylic paints if you go for the Golden graphite acrylic.Bottom line: avoid the bottles, but the set is a good option if you want to experiment with watercolor graphite and acrylic paint. If you like the results you obtain when trying out the set, though, I recommend switching to the Daniel Smith, Art graph or golden alternative.

I was really excited to receive this product--I liked the color of Liquid Pencil and liked the results after using it, but the packaging may be faulty. The lid was tightly replaced, but within a few weeks, the product within the bottle had totally dried up. I probably should have complained to the company and requested an exchange or refund, but didn't.
Merchant response: We are sorry that this product did not work as expected. A member of our Customer Care team will be contacting you for further assistance. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Fantastic for travel & free idea flow
from Melbourne, Australia
To address some of the remarks from below: first of all, this product comes in two different formulas: rewettable and permanent formula. Be careful which one you're using, because their behaviour is different.Erasing of Derivan liquid pencil works, if you use:- rewettable formula bottles (not permanent formulas), and if- washes are applied thinly. If liquid pencil rewettable formula is applied too thickly, erasing works to some extent, but not entirely. Which is somewhat to be expected: if you draw heavily with normal graphite pencil, there will never be perfect erase after it. To start with, the consistency of liquid pencil in its bottle is buttery, and best is if you use it like watercolour, to playfully build up your liquid drawing from lighter tones to darker, gradually reducing amount of water used. As for paper, use good some quality watercolour paper. Try hot-pressed surface — it works wonderful.I find liquid pencil immensely satisfying to use during travels, because it allows to quickly lay down paint of thicker consistency: just add a little water, and make picture much faster than with pencil, or with watercolour. For that purpose of fast sketching, and capturing free flow of ideas, this product is simply unbeatable. It dries much faster than watercolour, and doesn't require as much water to work with either. I can finish 4-5 sketches with liquid pencil that look so much better and more detailed than I'm able to lay down a single watercolour sketch of same size, which is always slow to dry and cannot be touched before washes are dry (unless you want mud). 19th century travelling artists would kill for this product — it offers 10x more information and imagination in a sketch than pencil, it's 10x faster to use than pencil, yet it dries 5x as fast as watercolour! Use it wisely and see for yourself. Economy is also good: I'm now finishing my second A4 sketchbook with it (60 sheets each), and my bottle is half full. In summary: a) be aware of permanent and rewettable formulas, b) use good grade paper (watercolour paper is best for quality artwork), c) grab a sketchbook and have fun!
