Daler-Rowney Artists' Egg Tempera

Daler-Rowney is proud to be one of the few paint makers offering classical egg tempera — one of the world's oldest painting mediums — in ready-mixed tubes for contemporary fine art applications.

Renowned for its bold, vivid colors, smooth matte finish, and precision of application, egg tempera dates back to Roman Egypt and was the predominant medium used in panel paintings and illuminated manuscripts from the Byzantine period through the Renaissance. It has periodically been revived to spectacular effect by artists including William Blake, the Pre-Raphaelites, Giorgio de Chirico, Thomas Hart Benton, Andrew Wyeth, and many others.

For painters interested in replicating the effects of the Old Masters — or putting a contemporary spin on traditional techniques — egg tempera is an ideal medium to explore.

The authentic formulation for Daler-Rowney Artists' Egg Tempera dates back to 1906 and consists of high-quality pigment dispersed in liquid egg yolk. Watersoluble yet highly archival, it may be thinned without toxic solvents and cleans up easily with soap and water.
