Professional and portable, Dahle's mechanical pencil sharpener accepts standard, oversized, and European made pencils up to 12 mm in diameter. It features point adjustment to create blunt or extra sharp tips, as well as automatic feed and shut-off when the desired point is reached.
Dahle sharpeners have Solingen steel blades that remove easily for cleaning. They are safe for even the softest leads and pastel pencils. To many professional artists and illustrators, Dahle's shut-off and point adjustment mechanisms make their sharpeners the most economical choice, as well as the most convenient.

I purchased this for my wife to sharpen colored pencils. She was very happy with the way it worked. If you use the sharpener gently, it will make a sharp point without breaking the colored pencil lead.

If your into drawing with the softest of Charcoal. This sharpener is a must have. Never break your charcoal again when sharpening it.
Not Happy. Dont buy!
The Sharpner constantly jams..Very flimsey...The blade assembly keeps falling out and has to be cleaned all the time or it does not work. Very very disappointed.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Good as long as it lasts
from Pacific Coast
I loved this sharpener at first. It sharpened pastel and colored pencils quite well - to a much finer point than any hand held sharpener can do. As others have mentioned there are no instructions and you have to figure out how to use the "grabber" to get the pencil to pull in. The sharpness adjustment never worked. But, it sharpened pencils great. Until it didn't. After about 50-75 sharpenings, it started breaking off tips. Then it would not pull the pencil in and there was no sharpening happening. But it continued to break off tips. I lost large chunks of expensive pencils trying to get it to work again. I cleaned it, tried different placements of the "gripper", different types of pencils. Nothing worked. Blick has an excellent return policy, but it's really not worth the cost of shipping it back for the cost of the item. For 50 sharpenings, it cost me about 50 cents per sharpening. I will have to find another way to reliably gat a fine point on my pastel and colored pencils. It's a shame, because when this sharpener works, it works great. Just not for very long, as some others have pointed out.

My Favorite Pencil Sharpener
from Memphis, TN
I needed a dull angle sharpener for golf style pencils. No luck. Settled on this sharpener. It did provider a more shallow angle than any other sharpener I could find AND it was an overall EXCELLENT purchase.I taught in a hospital setting. Students could only use pencils. This sharpener outlasted two or three electric pencil sharpeners that other teachers were using. However, I or other staff members did all the sharpening which prevented damage. The crank turns counter-clockwise. Turning it clockwise causes it to disassemble. (The final use was by an 'untrained' staff person that pushed the pencil in too hard and torqued it to hard clockwise. Pieces twisted and broke. BUT this was after approx 100 uses daily for 9 months.) I did not clip the box to a desk--just held it in my left hand and cranked with my right. The jaws grip the pencil and allow for one-handed use if it is clipped down. NOTE: I only used the sharpener for graphite pencils. Colored pencils would surely decrease the life. I use a cheap electric pencil sharpener for colored pencils. This is my FAVORITE sharpener. I purchase a new one at the beginning of each year. It is light-weight and durable. Would be great to carry in a back-pack if you journal or sketch. There is a setting that allows you to adjust the sharpness of the point. The actual angle, as noted, is a bit blunter than standard sharpener which is something I wanted so that the pencils would last longer.

Not good for classroom use
By Art teacher Fairport
from Fairport, NY
I bought several of these sharpeners for my art classroom. We go through pencil sharpeners a lot. I was excited when I first bought these they seemed durable at first. Over the course of the school year it the inside parts started to break. Mostly the plastic parts. If a student accidentally dropped in on the floor when they were emptying it the inside parts broke easily as well. I was so disappointed because I thought I had found the best sharpener. It would withstand use from one single user who was able to take care of it but even afetr giving my students specific instructions on how to use it they had trouble figuring it out and the pencils were not coming out as perfect as when they sharpener was fresh out of the box. It would be great if they can replace some of the inner guts of this sharpener with sturdier parts. It just didnt stand up to the quality I had expected from Dahle.

Works great - briefly
from Plymouth, MA
This will be my 4th Dahle sharpener in as many years. A student of mine used it to sharpen all of her pastel pencils, and I found myself having to buy a new one. The spring loaded pencil grabber gets unbalanced after a while and the pencils don't sharpen evenly. The Big one 166 lasted a little longer than the smaller one, but they all end up the same - wrecking pastel pencils - after rigorous use. Why buy another? Because they are the best sharpener for pastel pencils. Too bad they aren't made to last. Pastel pecils are expensive; someone ought to invent a sharpener worthy of them.

Not crazy about this purchase
By Carrol Ann
from Jacksonville, FL
I am not crazy about this sharpener. It is not possible to properly sharpen scholastic pencils. I can't get a good point, even with the adjustment that it advertises. It does a little better with artist pencils, but I know I am not going to be keeping this for long. In fact, I am using my 99 cent sharpener for scholastic colored pencils. Too bad.
