Da Vinci's "Maestro" designation is reserved for brushes manufactured using male winter Siberian Kolinsky Red Sable fur. These are top-of-the-line, high quality brushes.
The extra sharp needle-like point and longer tapered hair length result in faster action at the tip and the tightest snap at the point. Expect superior spring and control, plus unsurpassed water-carrying performance.
All brushes have plated brass, seamless ferrules. Brush hairs are glued into the ferrule by a dosing machine. Then the ferrule is filled with a modern component-glue. After the drying and curing process, all the hairs are firmly positioned. Da Vinci uses only nickel- and gold-plated brass ferrules, which are rust resistant.
Before leaving the factory, each brush is carefully checked to make sure the finishing of the brush-head is impeccable and the ferrule is firmly attached to the handle. Carefully packaged, it will begin its journey, perhaps over mountains and oceans, to one of Da Vinci's loyal customers making art in the wide, wide world.
For three generations, Da Vinci has created the highest quality artist and specialty brushes. Today, the family owned business offers the largest selection of artist brushes in the world. Each brush is crafted with pride to Da Vinci's exacting standards. Using the finest raw materials available, skilled brushmakers draw on both centuries-old wisdom and input from contemporary professional artists. Utilizing the latest technical innovations, they create brushes of unsurpassed beauty, quality, and endurance.
Hans-Friedrich Defet was well-educated in the traditions of brushmaking, learning from both his grandfather and father the history of brushmaking in Nuremberg, Germany. Until the end of the 17th century, each artist had to make his own painting tools. During the 18th century, an ambitious crafts guild started to master the art of brush binding, relieving the artist of this burden. As this guild increased its expertise through experience and experimentation, the young trade was soon booming in the commercial town of Nuremberg. The city soon gained a worldwide reputation for brushmaking.
Series 5506, Retouch — A retouch brush is a pointed round kolinsky that has a shorter tip than a standard kolinsky sable round.
Note — Brush sizes are not standardized. The length and width of a brush of a given shape and size varies considerably by manufacturer. Since fine art brushes are handmade, expect some variation even among brushes from a given manufacturer.

Comments about Da Vinci Maestro Kolinsky Long Tapered Round Brushes Series 35:
Holds the paint well. I thought I got the right size but need to try again. I am happy with the two I have and can use them. I needed the smallest point for portrait painting on a piece that is only 1 1/2 inches wide and 2 inches long

I usually use only a filbert and liner for my simpler pieces, so I've been looking for a good one. This is a perfect shape, size, and quality, and the price was much less than it should have been. It's worked wonderfully for anything from simple washes to thinner lines and blots.

Comments about Da Vinci Brushes Da Vinci Maestro Kolinsky Liner Brushes Series 1200K:
I bought the travel brushes in sizes 8, 10, and 12 planning on keeping only one. I ended keeping all three and I plan on purchasing a smaller size 4 brush during the next sale. These are amazing brushes. I thought I wouldn't like the shortened barrel type handle, however they really are not that short, maybe an inch or two difference from the full-handled brushes. The only part I do not like, is that the brushes can get bent backwards when putting them back in the handle when dry. Now, instead of air drying then putting the brush in the handle, I dry the brush as much as possible with a tissue, form the point, and put in the handle while still a little damp. The handle end has a hole so moisture can escape.

Comments about Da Vinci Brushes Da Vinci Maestro Kolinsky Liner Brushes Series 1200K:
I have painted watercolors as a hobby for over 30 years. I have always used the best paper, but have been using cheaper brushes. Many of the painting books that I have purchased have recommended buying the best brushes that you can afford. Well I should have spent the extra money years ago!!! They do make a difference! It is especially nice to have a great point on a larger brush. This allows me to do detail work with a brush that will hold a good quantity of paint. They really do retain their shape; a quick snap brings back the fine point.

I've painted for over fifteen years with mostly high quality synthetic brushes. This brush was worth the wait. The tip stays in a fine point. The brush isn't overly soft or too stiff. I highly recommend this brush.

Comments about Da Vinci Maestro Kolinsky Sable Round Series 10:
Great investment! I've been painting 1/35 scale human figures ... for those not into miniatures, the head is about the same size as Lincoln's head on a penny. It was a tremendous challenge doing proper shading and painting tiny details like eyes (iris, pupils) in this size. Bought these DaVinci Maestro #0, 3/0 and 10/0 brushes on the recommendation of a friend. They hold a SUPERB point, paint flows nicely ... the 3/0 is small enough to paint irises and other tiny details. 10/0 allows me to dot the pupils! Never paid this much for paint brushes before, but VERY well worth the investment here. I've made various purchases from Dick Blick, as usual, service was quick on these.

Comments about Da Vinci Maestro Travel Brush:
After many years of sketching and painting on location, I decided to treat myself to the best sable travel brush on the market.I was not disappointed!
The brush point dances on the page. The body holds lots of paint and water and releases it as I want. It has a lovely "feel" in the hand...not too stiff, not too soft. I liked my brush so much, I ordered another in the same week!
