They go well with the wooden holder
from Frostburg, MD
I ordered the wooden holder and these leads to try. Now I use them all the time Great value.
Fantastic, flexible and perfect for on site sketching

My daughter brought me back a beautiful pencil lead holder when she went to Italy, along with 2 extra leads, all graphite. This took me only far enough to fall in love with them. The Cretacolor leads were not only the answer, but the answer with a wonderful range of mediums! Buy 2-3 lead holders and a box or two of the multi color leads for a powerful and flexible sketching toolbox. Once you know which ones you like best, it's a great boon that you can get whole boxes of just the ones you like! You can tuck the leads inside the holders (I like the feel of the wood one) while traveling, plus "switch out" different leads super quickly. I keep 2 holders and ALL the range of leads in one small metal tin by Caran, along with a 2mm mech pencil holder for detail work. You can fit a LOT of materials into a small carrying case using this approach. The leads fit into regular sized sharpeners, and I keep a sandpaper pad for when I want a really long shape for toning.

Cretacolor Leads are the only leads one can buy that fill a 5.6mm lead holder. I really do not like when I have to sharpen pencils and they get smaller and smaller, the weight changes too dramatically and the leads feel thin and narrow by comparison to using a lead holder. As such, these leads fill a very small hole that none other can fill, keeping my hands clean while allowing me a range of wonderful smooth colors that apply consistently and beautifully. If you are looking for colored leads for your lead holder these are the best value one can ever find, I have done hundreds of drawings with these leads over the years and will buy them again year after year.

Fun drawing tool

I really enjoy drawing with these leads. I purchased them to use with the art alternatives clutch pencil and live everything about it. It lays down wonderfully.

For loose layout work, these might be okay, I suppose. The quality of the leads did not impress me all that much. The charcoal and graphite seemed scritchy. The leads break easily in shipping. You can't really keep a meaningful sharp point on these, but they're not thick enough to use comfortably by themselves without the lead holder. I thought the holder and leads looked nice online and decided to try them, but for me, they just don't really fulfill any particular artistic need that I can identify and the leads just didn't seem very satisfying in actual use. I've had good experiences with some Creatacolor products, including their pencils, but this product was kind of lacking, for me. I got it, used it a few times, then relegated it to a corner, finding that other more standard, inexpensive tools do an equal or better job. They might be a good purchase depending on what you want to accomplish, but I didn't feel they were anything special in either quality or functionality for my purposes.

Happy to find Cretacolor lead refills
from Rockville, MD
Because my Cretacolor lead holder is an older model, I was worried that the refills were no longer available. They aren't in stores so it was a relief to find them at Blick's.

I have tried nearly all of the Cretacolor leads; Nero, Graphite, Sanguine oil, soft and medium charcoal, and black and white chalk. Each artist will want to experiment to decide which ones are suitable for their needs. I especially like the charcoals for their ability to vary the darkness and their ability to blend well. The Sanguine oil and B & W leads do not blend as well, making them best suited to styles of drawing where blending is not wanted. All the leads I have tried are of excellent quality and can be sharpened with the KUM 6 mm sharpener (part # 105.35.21) to a fine point, so that you can add some fine line detailing and highlights. An excellent lead holder is the Koh-i-noor universal lead holder (red plastic barrel with metal clutch mechanism). This holder holds the leads better while sharpening without allowing them to rotate in the holder than others I have tried. I would also mention that none of the leads (including the charcoal) came from Blick broken. Hope this helps.

Great for sketching
from Mistover Vale, VT
These leads take a fine point using the Alvin bullet sharpener, but I use them mostly for overcoming my tendency to let details blind me to big shapes. They've helped me to speed up and smooth out my marks, becoming less tentative and more expressive. I wish Blick would carry the nero and sepia (looks grand on tan paper) leads.

I bought a pack of six assorted leads and tried them on some Strathmore Pastel paper. My first impression was the ease of flow onto paper surface. The drag has a smooth feel to it, especially the 4B lead. I also combined a few of these colors with some watercolor wash and they seem to work well together! I am still experimenting with various paper surfaces as with most everything I sketch with. No complaints here. Thank You Blick's of San Diego for keeping this quality product in stock.
