Creative Techniques: Watercolor gives art students and hobbyists alike a complete course in the many different techniques applicable to watercolor painting. Both beginners and experienced artists are sure to find a wealth of creative ideas combined with solid instruction in the fundamentals of watercolor technique. Color illustrations demonstrate works in progress as well as faithful reproductions of famous works of art. An introductory chapter describes the pigments, brushes, papers, and other necessary equipment, then demonstrates how to use them to produce the best effect. The subsequent chapters present 14 distinct approaches to watercolor art, each approach starting with an example of a finished work by a famous watercolor artist. Among the finished works are a Cézanne painting of a woodland scene, emphasizing the transparent effects that can be achieved with watercolors. A strikingly different exercise shows a Turner seascape, and demonstrates how he achieved dramatic effects by applying pigments to wet paper. A watercolor portrait by pop artist Chuck Close demonstrates the pointillist technique, and Robert Delaunay's Hommage à Bleriot demonstrates the use of watercolor in abstract art.
