Examples are rendered in both monochrome and color media — charcoal, India ink, colored inks, crayons, and pastel chalks. Illustrations that show divergent styles and techniques are by well-known artists, ranging from the Impressionist Edgar Degas and 20th century master Pablo Picasso, to pop artist Robert Rauschenberg and abstract expressionist Cy Twombly.

These and other examples are analyzed and followed up with instruction that guides students toward achieving the demonstrated effects. As students master different and original approaches to drawing, they are inspired to develop their own imaginative modes of personal expression.
