Comments about Copic Multiliner SP Pens:

I use Copic products for practically every piece that i undertake, whether it's markers, opaque white, or especially the multiliners. This is the first time I've had such an issue with a product that i'm actually moved to writing a negative review on it.

First off, I am a working professional, who inks almost exclusively with the Copic Multiliners. Normally, i use the disposable pens, and have never had a single problem with them, and in fact rave about the quality of them to my peers. But because of the amount of projects i have coming up, i thought it might be more cost effective to just get the SPs, and have a steady stock of replaceable parts on hand should one start to wear down.

I thought wrong. I received my supply in on 4/24. It's now less than a week later, and i've had to replace the nibs on 3/5 pens, as well as the ink cartridge on one. The disposable multiliners last me months, of *hard* use (not with a heavy hand, just the sheer volume of work). I work primarily in the .03/.05/.1 range, and have had nothing but shoddy line quality, whether it be from the cartridge or especially the nibs fraying. I will say that the .3 and .5 are of decent quality, but anything below that isn't worth your time or money. The brush nib also splits very quickly.

I love my Copic supplies, and recommend pretty much every other product from them, except these. I suggest staying with the disposable line, and just stocking up if you know you'll be needing to use them heavily. I will be contacting DickBlick to see if i can get an exchange for these.

These pens are nice looking and built with nice materials, but they aren't great in terms of practical use.

For one, the cap doesn't stay on when you remove it and reattach it to the back end of the pen for drawing. The plastic bit that extends from the pen's aluminum body doesn't reach far enough out to have enough surface area for the cap to stay on. This is a no-brainer, but they didn't get it right.

The ink is quite nice, being pigmented black. However, the tips can wear out rather easily unless you only use gentle pressure when drawing. Also, the aluminum housing of the pen is again great to look at, but it's so smooth that it's very easy for the pen to slip in your hand. The unusually bulky size of the pen also makes gripping it a problem. I don't usually have problems with the grip of any pen, really, but this is the first one I've used that I couldn't hold on to reliably when drawing.

That said, it's nice. But I wish there were better alternatives out there other than the cheaper, disposable pigment liners from other companies.

I have used Rotring, Kohinor, Staedtler, Sakura, and Prismacolor technical and fine line pens. These win hands down. I am a civil engineer by trade, these are perfect for technical drawings. I enjoy art on the side, these are perfect for those as well.

I only used the 0.03 nib size. The pen feels great in hand, but the fiber nib seems to dry out very fast, causing the ink to stop passing thru the nib. The ink inside is blocked by dry ink in the nib. I don't know about the larger sizes, but the 0.03 is so bad, I've had to use as many as four nibs for an 18x24 drawing on 140 lb paper. The ink refills seem to have a good ink supply, but the constant need to change nibs even during the work, makes the pen prohibitively expensive for my use. If you buy a 0.03 pen, you should buy about 5 extra nibs to get thru the ink cartridge. I will not continue using this product in my studio due to the bottom line cost involved in getting the ink out onto the picture. If you have never used it before, approach with caution. Just buy one pin and a half dozen nibs to start. The 0.03 starts out great, but falters early on, making the picture cost more to finish than anticipated. It looks as if I am still looking for a very fine line "ink" pen that is reliable.

I've used technical pens for years and these are my favorite. I first picked these up because they were cheaper than the competitor brand and these produce thicker lines, the tips are more durable and they waver less for making fine straight lines. The only thing that these are lacking is that the shade of black is not quite as dark as I would like it to be.

I purchased this item for my son for Christmas. He does finely detailed pen and ink drawings and was so excited to get color pens that are refillable! Prior to this, he only did black and white drawings and the pens were expensive and had to be thrown away when they were empty. He's very excited about these pens and can't wait to use them. Awesome pens. The metal body has a solid feel, much better than some other plastic options. Very consistent results, and you can buy both the tip and ink refills (even though I didn't try it yet).

I have tried a number of brands: Staedler, Sakura Micron, Faber-Castell and the occasional ball point and none of them stand up to these amazing Copic Multiliners.

I have used them on every surface from watercolor paper, bristol board, printer paper and it never bleeds, makes a consistent line that is the blackest I've ever seen. The smallest sizes are so incredibly tiny that I was afraid of using them for fear of breaking them, but now that have turned into my workhorses for detailing in my anime drawings. The brush nibs are nice though I found the tips curled a little too soon but they still produce nice varied widths.

I haven't used them with illustration markers but I'm more than positive they'll work great, since that's kind of what they're supposed to be partnered with. But I use them to outline watercolor pictures and colored pencils. It takes a lot of erasing to wear the line down and they don't run with watercolor paint. I even write with them!

Expensive, but with replacable nibs and ink, these are an amazing value that will last FOREVER. I've had my pack for like 2 years and I've only had to change the nibs on two pens. But if you just want to try them out or won't be using them regularly, I recommend trying the multiliners first.

Overall, the perfect pens.

These pens are awesome, they are completely refillable, and do no dry out as you make long stokes as most pens do. With that being said, if your pen starts to dry out, it may need a new tip or ink refill. Do not blame the pen for poor performance until you ensure the tip and ink are in good condition. I left mine outside and thought they were bad until I realized ink dried on the tip. It's economical as you can change the tip and ink refill. Oh, please pull the tip out first before removing the ink refill. You will damage the tip if you do not remove it before changing the ink refill. Also, the metal body has a solid feel, more than plastic.
