I use these with newsprint for studies. This combination has been recommended by several online artists, and I used a similar combination many years ago in art class - I can see why. You can get a nice even tone, or go really dark, without all the dust you normally get from vine or willow charcoal. I like that the paper grabs it, and you can still do a little finger blending. I've used conte in crayons before, but it is nice to have a full pencil which is easier for me to draw with.
Best Value By Far

Looked many places and this is by far the best deal I could find for these pencils. The quality of the pencil seems to be better than similar that I have ordered elsewhere in the past. The service was amazing and shipping was fast! All around great deal and I will definitely order again from here.

I've seen on YouTube that lots of folks are using these pencils for practice sketching with Newsprint... so I thought I'd give it a try. Great darks and is erasable if you mess up. A little too much friction for me say compared to chalk or charcoal; however, it forces you to make each stroke count as it is a mess to erase and redraw... smears fine for grays. I think it will make me a better artist as now I can't totally rely on the eraser to fix things and need to try harder to get it right the first time...

After trying other brands and this .My conclusion is: if your budget is tight , buy the orange General's ones ; if you don't mind to spend a bit more , buy these Conte pencils . The Conte ones are twice as big only smoother than the former .The darkness of B grade is comparable to between 2b and 4b of General's. When the Conte is on sales, they are really the deal.I am learning figure drawing and I use newsprint paper. Both brands work perfectly on the paper. There is no doubt why every art teacher would recommend Conte pencils

These pencils are a big step up from my normal sketching pencils. They are versatile, distribute on the paper well, and are easily erasable. I look forward to creating my next masterpiece with them!

So far the best charcoal pencils I use and will keep using. Very suitable either for study or high end drawings. Eager to test the other options available. Best of all very affordable compared to other suppliers.

I was recently introduced to these pencils via watching multiple videos of drawing from eleven different art schools on youtube. Everyone of them had their instructor and students using these pencils. When I checked for them on Blick, I was a bit surprised at the high price but I decided to try them out and I only bought one in each grade charcoal and carbon. All I can say is - WOW! VERY nice pencils. I was surprised to discover how large in diameter these pencils were. But I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that the shaft of charcoal and carbon is TWICE the size of a regular charcoal/carbon pencil (General's, Primo, Wolff's, Derwent). I was basically getting TWO pencils of the same grade in just one slightly larger pencil. They are consist in their texture and in the way they lay down on paper. And with a little bit more pressure added during the application, one can get VERY rich darks from just the B pencil, whereas I would have used another pencil of a softer grade in order to achieve equal darkness (i.e. going from a B to a 4B or 6B in General's)All I can say is that these pencils are wonderful to work with and I'm really impressed by their performance. Now if only they would drop their price by $0.25 cents, I'd say these would be A STEAL!
