Welcome to dickblick
Invented in France in 1795 by Nicolas-Jacques Conté especially for drawing and sketching, Conté Crayons are made from a blend of natural pigments, kaolin clay, and graphite. The Conté crayon has been used by many of the world’s greatest artists, including Picasso, Delacroix, and Degas.
The rich, vivid colors of Conté Crayons mix together nicely, and a range of effects can be consistently produced. They are well suited for use on newsprint, bristol, toned paper or heavily grained surfaces. Their rich opacity makes them ideal for work on darker papers and their quality ensures the longevity of drawings. Conté crayons are waxier and much firmer than soft pastels, so they produce little dust and are easy to control.
Sharpen Conté Crayons to a chisel tip with a sanding pad for detailed work or drag them flat on their sides for various shading techniques on large areas. The unique shape allows the sticks to be broken for easier use. Sticks are 2½" long × ¼" square (63 mm × 6 mm). Each box contains 2 or 12 crayons of one color, except for the color sets.
Please refer to the Item Specs tab of this page for a complete listing of the colors in each set.

I use them for quick figure drawing. I like them because they don't smear easily like charcoal, yet I can still blend them with a cloth.
I do buy this product often, highly recommend
By Two Horses Art
I like using conte crayons over pastels because it allows for more control and the mixing of colors is awesome. They feel better on paper, not as scratchy as charcoal, and less dust, as well as more firm in your hand.

Color my world!

It's true, using the best quality tool you get the best possible outcome. Conte makes one of the best. I like working with these crayons mainly because the colors are consistent and the texture is perfect for the drawings I do. There really is no downside to using these pastels, save for maybe there could be more of them to work with. These truly are a joy to work with.
Conte Crayon Perfection

We used these conte crayon with older kids at a library workshop about cave painting. The kids had never used conte crayon before, and they enjoyed trying these "grown up" art materials. The conte looked great on our crumpled brown paper bags, and it really brought their woolly mammoths to life! Excellent for older kids...they loved using them.
Disappointed with matchboxes of 4 colors
from Mt View CA
I bought these crayons in set of 2 in 2B and in a matchbox 2B as well.I first used the matchbox. I am very disappointed with the quality of crayons in 4 colors matchbox. They are scratchy and inconsistent how they apply to the surface. Scratching persists no matter how I turn my crayon. They are not usable. Box says they were made in China. Later I decided to try the one in a set of 2. To my surprise, these are totally different. They do not scratch when applied, much smoother and consistent in application. Very nice and these I would recommend. I wonder where these are made. Maybe that makes a difference. Same brand, two different quality of same product. I gave my review 3 stars because I like the sticks of 2. Knowing that there is no consistency in a product, I am not sure I will buy Conte again.

A big hit
from Charlotte, NC
I got the 48 color set for my daughter and she has been ecstatic about them. Even the drawings she calls 'poor' are outstanding, vibrant, and alive. What a difference they have made in her style. The only negative was that she did one and leaned the drawing pad to her chest so she could type an email and got smudges on her shirt. She claims the shirt is ruined but we've yet to try washing it.
The very best of its kind.

Well, yes, Conte crayons cost a bit. However, they are the smoothest crayon medium around. My high school students and I veer toward these to get the most vibrant results. It is superior to its rivals, hands down. Worth the extra cost.
