Beginning with some thoughts on how we define the concept of color, Richard Keyes explains various methods people in history have used to systemize color. These systems include the additive and subtractive color wheels, which are addressed as metaphorical maps of color.

The basic vocabulary we use to describe color — hue, value, and saturation — are explained through illustrative and graphic means. The majority of this DVD-ROM is concerned with color harmonies and contrasts, with references to more than 350 paintings.

This lecture is intended to do more than spend time defining this list of terms — advice is offered about how to best use these "Mechanics of Color" to your advantage, and a few traps to avoid.

The DVD-ROM format is not resolution locked like a DVD video, giving the ability to produce high definition video without the viewer needing an HD or BluRay player. 120 minutes.

Minimum Computer System Requirements: 1GHZ or faster processor, 512 MB RAM, 64 MB Video RAM. DVD-ROM Drive, 5 GB hard disk drive, 1280 × 1024 display.

I would have given this wonderful work a 5 star rating had it not been for technical problems this DVD-ROM experiences on some, and only some, computer systems. In short, this DVD-ROM plays on an older computer system that meets requirements but would not play on three different computer systems that all exceeded minimum requirements (more on that in a moment).

This disc, unlike the other Gnomen Workshops I've bought so far, is a DVD-ROM and DVD-ROMs do not play on regular DVD players...not on a PS3, not on a Blue Ray Player and not on regular DVD players.

DVD-ROMs play on computer systems. The lectures on this DVD-ROM are QuickTime movies. (Please read the Read Me and PDF files on this disc before attempting to play it. You may have to install things in order for this DVD-ROM to play correctly or completely.)

Requirements from the Back of the DVD-ROM:

Minimum Computer System Requirements: 1GHZ or faster processor, 512 MB RAM, 64 MB Video RAM. DVD-ROM Drive, 5 GB hard disk drive, 1280 x 1024 display.

Minimum Operating System Requirements: Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Windows 2000, or Apple Mac OS x 10.3.9

This DVD-ROM plays beautifully on my 32 bit system using Windows Vista. (Windows Vista is an older version than Windows 7 or Windows 7 Service Pack 1.)

Even though the general rule is that you can usually play your stuff on newer systems that meet or exceed requirements, this DVD-ROM edition would not play on three other computers, all of which:

1) Exceeded the stated minimum requirements.
2) Had all the required programs installed and up to date.
3) Were all either 64 bit Windows 7 or Windows 7 Service Pack 1.

We read the Read Me and PDF files on the disc. We followed directions exactly. We went over everything carefully yet the newer systems stopped playing this DVD-ROM only seconds into Lecture One. (The Introduction portion played just fine.)

It might be an oddball software compatibility issue?
