Percy Coate, the developer of Coates Willow Charcoal, began experimenting in the 1960s with the willow he grew to make drawing charcoal. Following in the steps of his grandfather, Robert Coate, who bought and sold local willow crops beginning in 1819, Percy Coate worked on his technique for a number of years before perfecting it. By the 1970s, he was finally ready to share Coates Willow Charcoal with the world.

Today Coates is still very much a family business, with family members involved in all aspects of the operation.

The willow plant used for making artist charcoal grows very quickly, ready for use after only one growing season. The process that turns raw willow sticks into willow charcoal, a simple yet indispensable tool for fine artists, takes three days. For many years, Coates Willow Charcoal has been recognized as the best-quality charcoal in the world.

This is the only willow charcoal I have tried and found it to be such an enjoyable experience I will only use it in the future. It is like holding a stick of butter, it glides so easily over the paper. Easy to blend and erase as needed. Not at all messy like regular charcoal. Well, OK some dust buy very manageable. Even my instructor was impressed with it.

I have used Coates thin willow charcoal for years for students in drawing classes and for myself. It is the best vine charcoal I have used. It is very black, erases easily, moves around well and for the figure is great. In addition it does not have any scratchy particles.

Forget the others, Coates gives the finest quality of Charcoal available. I use them by the dozens in my drawing practice and am constantly amazed at the range of tones, variation of line, and physical presence of these charcoal sticks.

I use this for my sketches and fine drawings with shading. It's really great to work with, if I want to make an area more light I just use my clean finger and clear up the spot I want lighter, if I really want it lighter than that I use a kneadable eraser.

It's great to work with and it comes in so many sizes which is really awesome and helpful! I love this product!
