Welcome to dickblick
Clairefontaine developed Pastelmat to meet the specific expectations of the most demanding pastel artists. This 170 lb (360 gsm) card is also an ideal surface for pencil and charcoal.
Pastelmat's single and original surface is a true innovation that combines the advantages of two traditional papers. The fine particles are sufficiently well-fixed for a smooth surface and comfort of use, and the smoothness of the cork grain in the adhesive ensures longevity.
The character "fixing" of this surface is so extraordinary that the positioning of multiple layers of pastels, and the realization of flat tints, precise details, or delicate and transparent veils are easily achieved.
The use of fixative is not necessary with Pastelmat. The rigidity, weight, and non-acidity, as well as the paper's light-resistance, guarantee conservation of your artwork. However, it is recommended that a sheet of acid-free translucent paper be placed over finished artworks created on Pastelmat.

I don't normally write reviews, but.. I recently got some pan pastels and was looking for a suitable ground. I do mostly animals and landscapes. I came across the pastelmat, read a lot of positive reviews and decided to give it a try. Wow! I don't think I will use anything else. It is suited just perfectly for my type of work. The pastel stays where you put it. Very little dust. After several layers it is easy to blend but still are able to get incredible detail with pastel pencils when needed. I'm very happy with the results i'm getting.
Great paper for colored pencil
These papers works so well for colored pencil. Can layer and layer and still have tooth to work with.
Amazing pastel paper
As a pastellist, one of my concerns is dust, and ultimatly fixative. This paper is simply amazing. It reduces dust significantly (more than 60%-70% less dust). No problem to use it with water, with oil pastels. It's a great improvement for pastels users.

This is the best subtrate for pastel pencils I've ever tried.
Fantastic surface for pastels!

Everything is great about this Pastelmat board. Easy blending without the roughness, holds color and no need to seal! Arrives nice and flat and I am doing all my charity work for pets on this surface.Only Con is a bit overpriced, especially the white colors.

Perfect paper for pastel and Colour Pencils
By Sandra T
from Qld, Australia
The absolute best paper for pastels, pastel pencils and Faber-Castell coloured pencils. Sharp detail, many layers, no fixative needed and yet it can provide such a delicate look too.Just be worned that once you have used this paper, you will prefer it over the cheaper ones.

Love painting on this!

I have done similar paintings using the same pastels on Pastel Paper and on Pastelmat and the difference in the quality is amazing. Pastelmat is pricey, but you get what you pay for!
Great for colored pencil
I love this paper. I recently used it for the first time with colored pencil and I was very pleased with the result. The surface is great for layering and fine detail work. I've already ordered other colors.
