CAS AlkydPro Mediums are a perfect complement to AlkydPro Oil Colors. Great for speeding the drying of both alkyds and traditional oil paints, they can also be used to extend colors, build texture, create impasto effects, and much more.
Great for plein air painting, this transparent Gel Medium FastDry is made with a fast-drying resin to speed the drying of both alkyds and traditional oils. Used for extending colors and creating transparent glazes, Gel Medium FastDry can be diluted with solvent to achieve a thinner consistency if desired. It dries within a few hours.

Thickens quickly then takes time to dry
from Cape Cod, Massachusetts
I bought this "fast drying" alkyd gel to take with me on a painting trip overseas because I wanted my plein air paintings to dry quickly so that I could stack them for the return trip to the US. I mixed the Alkyd Pro Gel Medium Fast Dry with my paints as I mixed colors on my palette. I found that this caused the mixtures to thicken within just a few minutes of mixing. Since I paint primarily with palette knife, this was unusual but not too troublesome, though I had to add oil medium to the mixtures when I wanted to use a brush. So the texture was a little hard to deal with for that reason. But then the paintings still took a few days to dry. I don't think they dried any faster than with the alkyd gel I usually use (Res-n-Gel). So all I got from this was a somewhat less enjoyable medium to paint with. Personally, I will stick with Res-n-Gel from now on.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Merchant response: Thank you for your feedback. The manufacturer has offered some points which may help to clarify and explain the results you had with this medium. • Alkydpro Gel Medium Fast Dry is not intended to take the place of the CAS Impasto Medium, which is the recommended medium for knife-painting techniques.• The Gel Medium Fast Dry should be thinned with solvent rather than other oil mediums to maintain the drying rate.• The drying times stated for Alkydpro Gel Medium Fast Dry are typical of the product alone or used in combination with AlkydPro paints. Using the medium with traditional oils will still speed their drying, but mixtures will not dry as quickly as comparable mixtures using AlkydPro paints. Best thick alkyd medium I've tried
By NM painter

And I've tried almost all of them. If you're looking for a thick impasto medium with good body that has some tack so it doesn't slip around, this works wonderfully to add transparency to your colors. The CAS 120 mm tube impasto medium is a different product than the CAS 175 mm impasto medium tube - the 120 mm is more transparent, less yellow, somewhat thicker and dries a bit faster. The Gamblin G gel is much thinner and more slippery, so it doesn't work as well for me to control thin even layers, and Neo Megilp takes a very long time to dry and is even thinner and more slippery. The CAS does get some lumps and nits if it's been around a while, so best to buy fresh. I add a small amount of Gamblin wax medium to reduce gloss and extend the working time a bit.

True to its specs, it really enhances the drying time of oil paint. The paint dries with a chalk/matte finish, not a gloss, and felt dry after about 2 hours. Amazing.I would probably like the product more, if it had been a substitute for what I'm looking for, but since I'm on a mission to replace Daniel Smith's Painting Medium for Oils and Alkyds, and this Alkyd Pro Gel Medium wasn't the ticket, I haven't rated it with the top rating that it probably deserves for its purposes. Since purchasing this product, I've been advised through Blick's technical representatives, to try Gamblin Oil Medium Neo-Megilp. So for anyone who is also looking for a replacement for Daniel Smith's Painting Medium for Oils and Alkyds, you might follow that review, to see how that product compares. (At the time of writing this, this medium has yet to arrive).

This revolutionizes the way I paint!
By Vagabond Artist

I mix this in with a palette knife and apply either with brush or knife. It works great for getting grounds down and done fast or for an energetic painting. I can now work a whole new way! I prefer a silkier more liquid medium for fussy stuff that needs slower application. But this medium is amazing and I have recommended to many artist friends, especially those transitioning over from acrylics to oils!
