Polyester canvas: the canvas of the future
By Steven K
from Greensboro, NC
There are many things to say about polyester canvas. 1. You do not need to have it heavily gessoed (I use oils, but I believe this is true for acrylic, too). A standard coat will do. However, if you don't get a small spot enough, the oils won't eat through the canvas because the canvas is already plastic, and it won't deteriorate.2. Polyester is generally less expensive than cotton or linen duct. If you are buying expensive poly duct, you don't need to. It also doesn't need to be a thick duct.3. Polyester does not expand and contract nearly as much as cotton or even linen in temperature or humidity change. In fact, I would worry more about the wood being used than the poly. Save your money for better wood... If you want it.4. It's resilient, and long lasting. This item is relatively new in the world of painting, and I am relatively new to using it. But I have used it, and so far, I can't say anything bad about it. I'm surprised there aren't more people using it. It's considerably better than cotton and even linen in every way. It's cheaper, better, longer lasting, doesn't expand and contract, and doesn't degrade when touching oils, which is a huge plus.
