Caran d'Ache Pastel Pencils are made from pure raw materials to create a pastel pencil paste that is fed by hand into round moulding dies, oven-dried in special baskets, carefully glued between two strips of the finest California cedar, and cut into lengths to produce several pencils. Four coats of clear varnish are applied, and great care is taken to exactly match the color cap to the shade of the pastel. As a final step, the pencils are sharpened in a double-cone process, a particularly delicate operation for such a fragile product.
Features of these pencils include a large lead diameter (4.7 mm) with a strong point and a rich texture that adheres well to most surfaces. Creamy to apply, the pencils shade easily, while their hexagonal, rounded barrels reduce the risk of breakage from rolling off work surfaces.
The color range for the Pastel Pencils includes a well-balanced selection of 84 shades that are vivid, luminous, natural (toned down), and respond perfectly to the needs of professional pastelists. Also included is a wide range of clear and dark flesh tones, and shades of Cobalt Blue, Green Earth, Beige, and cold and warm Grays often sought by pastelists who love a variety and depth of shades.
Caran d'Ache Pastel Pencils are also exceptionally lightfast. Of the range of 84 colors, 61 keep their intensity and luminosity unchanged for more than 50 years, and some even up to 100 years.

Smooth Classy Pencil
from San AntonioTexas
Comments about Caran d'Ache Caran d’Ache Pastel Pencils and Pastel Cubes:
I bought a couple of these pastel pencils to compliment my SKIN tone collection. THEY ARE very smooth! I can see that these pencils are top quality. They are expensive. I wish they were AP rated like Faber. They individual ones I ordered were AP. But so many are not. This is my own preference that I want Art supplies that are the safest rated. However, for years Artists have used traditional materials even before we had these ratings for safety use available. I don't know that they have posed such danger that Artists were getting cancer. But awareness is good today. And it gives me a measure of confidence that these things are checked out by Environmental Agencies to protect the public. That being said these Pastels are probably the best you can get. They are expensive. And I will tell you this, The Faber Castell Pastels are the best value.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

These are super pastel pencils....colors are highly pigmented, lots of choices....texture is great, very very blendable. Love them, but the price is prohibitive. Not sure they are that much nicer than some of the other pastel pencils for the extra $.

Gorgeous color, excellent quality

I bought a handful of open stock pastel pencils of various brands to try them out. I got 6 of these pencils. The colors are wonderful. The Payne's grey is gorgeous. I got a couple shades of muted violet and a couple of greens and plum. I The down side to many sets is the tendency for them to have "rainbow"colors. The Caran d'Ache pastel pencils come in some lovely muted tones. The color lays down very smoothly. Really beautiful. They are expensive, but really nice. I would love to have the whole set!
Caron d'Ache Wins Again

I am chiefly an oil painter, but I fell in love with watercolor and pastel years ago, so occasionally I take breaks from my main medium. Recently I was looking for a way to add detail to my pastels, and as I shopped I saw so many wonderful brands at Dick Blick. Long ago, on a trip to Switzerland, I discovered Caran d'Ache, and I've counted on this brand for the best in watercolor pencils and watercolor pastels ever since. So, in spite of the higher price, I chose them. Not only is the pigment extremely fine, but the pencil design - form, weight, and color - is wonderful. I am enormously pleased! Thank you, Caran d'Ache and Dick Blick.

Best I have used to date

I have just started using pastels. I have tried many. These are definitely the best I have tried to date. Love the rich color they provide. Go well with the Alvin Brass Bullet Sharpener.

Last year a did a side by side comparison of various colored pencils, water-soluble pencils, and pastel pencils on different textured surfaces. These Caran D'ache pastel pencils are about the most opaque and blendable of drawing media that I could find. Although they are rather expensive I've decided to slowly build up a collection of these, based on what I'm most likely to need (pale colors for highlights first). Caran D'ache tends to come out on top with many of their products. These are excellent.
Excellent Pastel Pencil

I bought a variety of open stock of these pencils to augment another pastel pencil set. They are beautifully pigmented and layer over themselves as well as the other pencils perfectly. An excellent pastel pencil, in my opinion.

I bought three of these to test against other brands of pastel pencils, colored pencils and the water soluble pencils. After trying only a couple of different surfaces, I believe these are the smoothest and creamiest of them all. They blend beautifully, no need for water. I will definitely buy more.
