Welcome to dickblick
These water-resistant crayons are soft and easy to work with. They feature exceptional covering power, excellent lightfastness, and are great for underpainting. Their hardness allows them to be sharpened more easily for detail and edge work.
Crayons are soluble in mineral spirits for wash techniques. Each stick is 3/8" diameter × 4" long (10 mm × 102 mm).

"Exceptional covering power" -- Sorry, NOT TRUE
By Napa Artist
from My studio
I have Caran d'Ache's 84-set Neocolor II watersoluble crayons and am quite happy with it, so I thought to give their Neocolor I wax crayons a try because I believed Caran d'Ache's sales pitch that these crayons have "exceptional covering power" which I found later was just that -- a sales pitch. The lighter crayons simply have little to no covering power in the sense that I wasn't able to layer lighter colors successfully over darker ones -- I mean some of my cheaper oil pastels did a better job of that. And many of the darker colors simply lacked the intensity I was expecting from a high-end manufacturer like Caran d'Ache. Overall, I find these wax crayons mediocre at best and disappointing at their worst especially since their price point is at the higher end of the scale for wax crayons.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I use crayons on linen for quilting.Because we still had crayola brand crayons I have used those in past designs. With my current quilt I have been using my new Caran d'Ache neocolors. They are much more vivid and glide on very smoothly. before I add embroidery I use a hot iron on the back side to set the colors and the final result is amazing. Much, much more depth and the finish colors blend together seamlessly. The caran wax pastels cost more than the school crayons but I will continue to use them for all of my designing.

Crayons are not just for kids!
from Edinboro, PA
These crayons are amazing. The level of pigment is very high but the wax does a great job in holding the pigment together. They work similarly to dry pastels in terms of being able to layer but maybe not to the extent of pastels. They are not greasy like oil pastels though will come off on your hands a little. Essentially they are like crayola crayons that you used as a kid but a thousand times better. They are a great way to grab some color in sketches. I also use them in oil paintings as either a preliminary sketch (soluble in mineral spirits) or on top of the paint. Also check out the water soluble version neocolor 2.

I actually bought these by mistake thinking they were Neocolor II water soluble crayons. However after using these with gamsol I absolutely loved the way they blended. Highly pigmented beautiful colors
