Comments about Canson XL Watercolor Pads:
Couldn't resist the ultra-special pricing and free shipping. Definitely worth it for this student-level watercolor paper, though it's not super-duper-professional quality (nor does it purport to be).
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Does different size matter the paper quality?
from College station, TX
I used the 9x12 size for years and the paper is good for daily watercolor. I recently purchased the 11x15, and to my surprise, the quality is so bad and I can't even paint on it! When you load the brush with water and paint, the paint cannot be spread on the paper at all. It seems there are some kind of wax on the paper (it wasn't like this when I used the same xl 9x12) and It feels like you are painting on a wax paper. When you are supposed to paint watercolor, that's definitely not right! I wonder why???
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Quality of this Product varies with Size
By Brian Propst
from Arnold, MO
I am a professional artist. I began using the Canson XL in the 9 x 12 size. I had very good results with this product in many of my completed watercolor paintings. Unfortunately as I began using larger sizes this product plunged into completely into unusable. I am not sure if the different sizes are made by different companies or not. But sizes 9 x 12 up to 11 x 15 seem to work like most watercolor paper. When I began to use 12 x 18 the surface began to fall apart. While wetting the paper to initally stretch the paper for use, simply lifting the paper out of the bath caused it to fall apart in my hands. It is as if no binding or sizing was used in the creation of this paper and the actual cotton fibers were pulling apart. I first thought it was a bad patch of paper I purchased, but I have been researching this problem for over a year and the problem still exists. I have produced over 80 watercolor paintings and have not had any problem with the 9x12 size and a dozen 11x15. But any size larger the paper acts as it was Bristol board and not watercolor paper and then acts like blotter paper. My watercolors will not flow or blend. I have tried to address this issue with Canson without any resolve. I also teach art and this paper only frustrates my students.

My go to watercolor paper
from Petaluma, CA
I teach mixed media classes where I provide the materials. This is the paper I use all the time. It is priced right, sturdy enough for lots of layers of paint and abuse from ambitious students. Comes in a range of sizes I like. We are not doing profession level work, so I can't speak to that. But for my personal use and the use of my students, this is great.

This student quality wc paper is perfect for my projects. Pleased with the careful packaging and prompt delivery.
Our students are preparing an exhibition. Thanks to this paper and Blick's multicolored inks, our kids' Calligraphy work looks amazing.

This pad is pretty good. (I brought the European fold pad.) The only thing that bothered me was when I laid out too much paint it would rise, but VERY little!- Has a European fold, which allows me to fold the back cover and it looks like I have a stack of papers, instead of struggling with the cover.- Pages absorb the paint surprisingly well!- Whenever I paint with watercolors, no "residue" of paint is left on the next page :)- Pages are relatively thick.- The pages do rise a little, almost nothing, but only when too much water is applied. But even then it still doesn't rise too much, only if you pay close attention. :)Overall, I enjoyed this product and thought it was wonderful.

Love the quality of this paper. I use it to make my handmade journals & it takes a lot of mediums very well!
Excellent choice for card makers
from Milwaukee WI
I use Canson paper for card making its the perfect weight and the texture it is a little smoother than Strathmore and Dick Blicks house brand.i run the pieces through my die cutting machine to make card fronts that I can watercolor as well as heat emboss. Even though it's a nice thick 140lb paper it cuts beautifully. The paper holds up well to both processes without warping. I cannot speak to its archival property but it's the perfect choice for my purposes.i buy the 9x12 pads and I can get four cards made per piece the left over scraps are great for saving and using for small pieces you want to watercolor and adhere to,other projects. Dick Blicks is the best place to buy this paper the price cannot be beat. You will not be disappointed. Once my watercolor piece is finished I adhere it to a colored piece of card stock for a "framed or faux matted" look.
A lifetime customer for this product

I am in the paper art industry and I create florals from this paper. It's high quality and what I like to call "toddler proof". I use 140lb standard and the end result is beautiful. dickblick.com has the most competitive pricing out there, and with bulk purchases I am able to save additionally! High quality paper. Highly recommended.
