Used to be way better...
I bought a new 9x12 pad of this paper when my old one from several years ago was running low. They must have changed their formula or something, because the new one feels like a completely different paper, and not in a good way.The new version feels slightly more plasticy (for lack of a better word) and floppier, though it's still 140 lb. But the killer is that it pills extremely bad. I did one wash for tone and the paper instantly pilled up all over. The result looks grainy, like an old photo or piece of felt, and feels rough to the touch. The paper didn't fall apart like some of the other reviewers experienced, at least. It dried reasonably flat. Of course, it's dirt cheap and still usable, but I kinda miss when it was both dirt cheap and a quality paper :(
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Can't beat it
These are often the base for my pressed flower art.
Exactly what i needed!
I typically go through mixed media drawings and watercolor drawings fast, which means i always need more media. Replenised my stock with this, it has more weight so it can stand up to more wetness, which i need. Love it. Its not flat, slightly rough on both sides, which i dont like (i like to use colored pencils as well).
Love this paper!

I use this watercolor paper in my classroom. Watercolors and overall art projects turn out so much better compared to the student grade papers. Worth the extra money spent! I believe in a great completed image. Kids are proud and in return parents and students grow to appreciate and support the arts more!

Couldn't resist the ultra-special pricing and free shipping. Definitely worth it for this student-level watercolor paper, though it's not super-duper-professional quality (nor does it purport to be).

Does different size matter the paper quality?
from College station, TX
I used the 9x12 size for years and the paper is good for daily watercolor. I recently purchased the 11x15, and to my surprise, the quality is so bad and I can't even paint on it! When you load the brush with water and paint, the paint cannot be spread on the paper at all. It seems there are some kind of wax on the paper (it wasn't like this when I used the same xl 9x12) and It feels like you are painting on a wax paper. When you are supposed to paint watercolor, that's definitely not right! I wonder why???

Quality of this Product varies with Size
By Brian Propst
from Arnold, MO
I am a professional artist. I began using the Canson XL in the 9 x 12 size. I had very good results with this product in many of my completed watercolor paintings. Unfortunately as I began using larger sizes this product plunged into completely into unusable. I am not sure if the different sizes are made by different companies or not. But sizes 9 x 12 up to 11 x 15 seem to work like most watercolor paper. When I began to use 12 x 18 the surface began to fall apart. While wetting the paper to initally stretch the paper for use, simply lifting the paper out of the bath caused it to fall apart in my hands. It is as if no binding or sizing was used in the creation of this paper and the actual cotton fibers were pulling apart. I first thought it was a bad patch of paper I purchased, but I have been researching this problem for over a year and the problem still exists. I have produced over 80 watercolor paintings and have not had any problem with the 9x12 size and a dozen 11x15. But any size larger the paper acts as it was Bristol board and not watercolor paper and then acts like blotter paper. My watercolors will not flow or blend. I have tried to address this issue with Canson without any resolve. I also teach art and this paper only frustrates my students.

My go to watercolor paper
from Petaluma, CA
I teach mixed media classes where I provide the materials. This is the paper I use all the time. It is priced right, sturdy enough for lots of layers of paint and abuse from ambitious students. Comes in a range of sizes I like. We are not doing profession level work, so I can't speak to that. But for my personal use and the use of my students, this is great.
