Welcome to dickblick
Canson Montval is a fine quality, acid-free, natural white, mildew resistant student watercolor paper.
Prized for its texture and resistance to repeated washing, this Cold Press paper is suitable for all wet media techniques, including watercolor, gouache, wash, and acrylic painting.
It is available in both a medium and a heavy grade. The 140 lb (300 gsm) grade has a hefty feel for a paper that can be purchased in a pad format, like that of expensive cotton papers. Pads are bound on the short side.

Don't buy it for watercolor. No Good.....
I bought the 8.5x5.5 of the product a while back and just recently decided to take it out for plein aire sketching with watercolor. The paper doesn't seem to be sized even externally, and it's definitely not cotton based. The paint slipped and slide uncontrollably, and it cockled so bad that I had to wait for it to dry. When dry, the page remained badly distorted. So, forget about washes. Even the Tombow Dual Brush pen seems to inflict damage to this paper. It says artist series and 140lbs but doesn't say anything about the makeup of the paper. It behaves like a student grade.I will probably use the rest of it as a sketch pad with pencils or technical pens. But DEFINITELY NOT for watercolor. Might be great for other applications such as printing cyanotypes, as someone mentioned.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Merchant response: We're sorry to hear that this paper didn't perform as you expected. It is 100% alpha cellulose, and though attractive to students because of its affordable price point, it won't perform like a cotton paper. If you would ever like additional information on the papers we offer, we're happy to help. Just call 1-800-933-2542 (8am-5:30pm CST M-F) or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Great Product For Beginners

I haven't used much watercolor paper. I am just getting into watercolors so this paper was fine for me as a beginner and experimenting.

I love dickblick
from Seattle, Washington
I bought this paper thinking that I would use it for my first painting of a subject as a study. I am using it for that but I think that I could use it for my final painting as well because of the quality. If you can't afford the 300 pound paper, you might like to give this a try. (I'm a beginner in watercolors and have a lot to learn.

Terrific for cyanotype
By Sarah the Teacher
from Millbrook, NY
I am a teacher and use this paper for making cyanotypes with my students. The process can be a bit finicky when it comes to papers and I've found that Montval works beautifully and is budget friendly, too. Terrific dark blue hues, holds up well in the water bath, too.

Great paper for alternative process
from Freeport Maine
I use this paper for alternative processes -- gum, cyanotype and ziatype and gum over ziatype. It holds up beautifully to multiple washes. It accepts the sensitizing coats well though a drop of Tween helps. It is heavy and has a real prescence. And the price is much lower than other well known papers that just don't stand up to multiple water washs.Beyone that it has a lovely surface. It is my #1 choice for a working paper.

Great wc paper for the price!
from Ridgewood, NJ
I love this paper for my watercolor everyday paper. For higher quality works I use more expensive paper but as everyday paper it performs great! It handles washes beautifully...it doesn't bloom which is a problem with other wc cold press paper brands in this price range which I have tried and was very disappointed in. It can hold a lot of water and washes. Great value...Highly recommend!
Really Like These
I use the 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 size for journals. They are easy to use, the paper works great for me and the size is perfect for what I want in a journal. I have ordered quite a few of them, and I am always happy. As long as they make my size, I will continue to use and enjoy them.
Great for Cyanotypes
I don't do watercoloring, so I can't comment on the previous observations. I am a photographer and often make Cyanotype prints. I have found it to be an excellent paper for that, all the way around, from the way it takes the sensitizer to the rich cobalt blue of the finished Cyanotype print.
