I wrote a previous positive review of the white and off-white canson papers, and I still stand by it. After trying the black paper, I recommend that you absolutely avoid it. I bought 25 sheets and immediately threw them out after using a few. The dye in the paper leaks into everything and immediately spread across my studio. Bad stuff, poorly made.

Printmaking: This is an excellent paper for etching (line and tonal/aquatint), lithography, screenprinting, and relief work. You can soak it, mist it, or wet-pack it. I've done as many as 16 lithographic runs on the paper without any problems. For etching, fine details print well and so do large, deeply etched lines/shapes.
Drawing: Appropriate for charcoal,graphite, and pen and ink. It erases well and can be sanded in areas that won't erase.

Canson's Edition is a remarkably versatile, high quality , 100 % cotton printmaking paper that performs beautifully with a wide range of drawing media. I know that it is a favorite with printmakers, but I like Edition for finished drawings as well. The paper is clearly two-sided: the smoother side has a light tooth and will take soft pencil and other pointed media beautifully. (Of course, as with any 100 % cotton printmaking paper, the surface is too soft for use with a very hard pencil or for a sharp crow quill pen! There are many good alternatives for those uses.) The rougher side of the page produces really deep velvety blacks with charcoal, and it has enough tooth to hold onto those darks as you work. I like working on the light gray page with conte crayon, adding the white crayon for sparkling lights in the drawing. The texture is deep enough to allow building up from a light hint of white to dense, fully opaque applications. (Really, the tooth is heavy enough even for much work in pastel!) Edition erases remarkably well - which is surprising in an all cotton paper- the surface is surprisingly durable. I wouldn't recommend the paper for traditional work in watercolor- like any printmaking paper, it is too absorbent for that type of work. I can't think of any paper that truly works perfectly with ALL media- Edition's range is remarkably broad.

Artists who have been using Stonehenge, which is also a fine quality paper in the moderate price range, may want to compare the two papers-my sense is that Edition performs somewhat better in most respects, but you can make your own comparisons. For anyone who is looking to try out some high quality sheets suitable for many drawing applications, this would be a really good paper with which to start that search.

I was very disappointed with the way this paper turned out. Oh it's pretty and it has an interesting texture to its surface but really not that great. I do a lot of the fine details of my drawings with a mechanical pencil; the surface of the canson paper holds the indents of the marks and can tear if I go over the same surface too many times. The paper also starts to warp as you draw on it, even if you tape it to a board before you even start (like I do). I wouldn't take this stuff even if it was free.
