I started using these sketchbooks a few years ago, and have been hooked ever since. I don't think I'll ever use a different kind, and since they come in a variety of sizes there's flexibility.
I use these for pre-drawings as well as pencil drawing and light ink washes.
Fabulous!

This is the only kind of sketchbook I use. The paper is good quality; not too rough nor too smooth. The pages will hold an inkwash, but Sharpies bleed through. You can do some simple watercolors. The cover is durable, you can use the back for cutting/pasting.
When you think of the concept 'sketchbook', this is what you are thinking of.
