Comments about Blickrylic Gesso:
Just okay. Rather thin and translucent for gesso even though I shook it up well.

I found your gesso to be a bit thin and short in pigment quality. I like more opacity so that I do not have to put 4-5 coats on my painting ground. Though it is inexpensive, I have experience with similarly priced gesso from LIQUITEX. LIQUITEX seems more opaque (less coats) and more brushable (Not such a short medium. So that you will understand, "short" meand chalky and "long" means more brushable and having greater opacity. It is sort of like comparing white lead with titanium white. LIQUITEX used to use white, Carrara marble as a pigment back in the 1960's.Thank you for asking.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Works as well as higher priced options
Great on drawing paper when using pencil. Makes tWorks great as a surface for graphite pencil drawings.
Thickness counts when it comes to Gesso!
from Comstock Prk, MI
I just used this product with my students to create texture for a textural ground drawing. They needed to apply gesso to a canvas board and then create a texture with it using their fingers, a comb or even wadded up paper. I've done this lesson in the past with other namebrand Gesso and we had to do several coats to get the desired texture. With the Blick Gesso, the students only had to do one coat, allow it to dry overnight and then they were ready to take their colored pencils and do their drawing to create a very textured piece of artwork. The assignment turned out wonderful, thanks to the thick Gesso made by BLick! Thanks so much!
Thick and Creamy

I don't have much to compare this product to but I've really liked how thick it is. I only had to use one coat for my project using the gesso as a primer before painting acylics.

Gesso is my key to making students happy. Many want to try painting and gesso allows us to resuse some paintings already used just by applying a layer or two of gesso-and now we have a blank canvas! The size is great for school class sizes.

Not worth it!
from Baja AZ
I am giving this one star. This is easily the worst gesso I have used. We purchased a pint and ended up using the whole thing to gesso two 16 x 24 canvasses. Those results are not typical of my experiences with other gessoes. I am very glad we did not buy more, for a number of reasons. To start with, number one, it smells bad, like cheap, flat- white, alkyd acrylic exterior house paint. Second, it performs like it too, in that it is nowhere near opaque, even when it has not been thinned. We were forced to use it unthinned after we realised that thinning by the usual moderate proportions resulted in something unusably translucent. Third, it dries to a rough, spiky finish, even on the final coat, after sanding. Fourth, worst of all, it does not do a sufficient job of tensioning the canvas. Other gessoes I have used do this with no problem, but not blickcrylic gesso. In short, I do not recommend blickrylic gesso. It is not a good value, and not worth the hair-pulling frustration of trying to gesso a canvas and ending up with an unusable mess that is going to have to be re-gessoed with a different brand. We will be using liquitex gesso in the future.

Not opaque, but otherwise good
I bought this gesso because I was looking for a more affordable alternative to my beloved Golden Gesso, which is smooth and very opaque. The Blickrylic got it half right, it is smooth but I don't find it very opaque. Even with 3 generous coats I could still easily see what was under it. I realize in some cases that might be an advantage, but I did want to write this review in case anyone was specifically looking for a very opaque gesso, as I was.
Priming woodcrafts for acryllic painting. Works fine at allowing the paint to adhere. A bit thinner than I would prefer, though my wood is quite grainy.
Much better than other brands
from Houston, Texas
I bought a pint of gesso just to compare against other brands from the local stores. The difference is obvious. Blick's gesso is almost twice as thick, and after thinning it with a little water, it even dried faster than others. Two coats are more than enough, while other brands would need three. What a great product!
