I am teaching a collage class and part of the class is block printing, these inks are very watery and slip when printing...there is no tack at all. They also dry very fast. I will never buy this product again. I had some left over Shiva brand water based block printing inks which were much better quality.

I use this product in my printmaking class. We have used it for monotypes, lithographs, wood, plastic, metal! you name it. It is true that it dries a little fast but if you keep a water spray around , like a small one for body spray with a good mist, then you can moisten your plate with one or two sprays 18 inches away and it gives life to your ink again. I love the color choices and they mix well to make other colors and tones. A little bit goes a long way!

I tried this ink out at home for block printing on lino but could not even get the ink to paper. it dried so quickly I could hardly get it rolled out with my brayer. Unfortunately it has already been opened and cannot be returned so I am now stuck with 8oz of ink that I have no use for...

I hand print at home and I pulled a proof tonight to test out these inks. Overall, I think it's a pretty good ink and it is so easy to clean up. However, it is probably best for those just starting out and trying relief printing for fun. It is definitely not what I would call a "professional" ink.

Pros:

Easy to clean up. No solvents needed!

Non-toxic.

I like the tackiness of the ink because I know it won't get sloppy on the lino block.

Cons:

The colors get muddy when mixing. Of course I was trying to mix a brown...that might have been my problem.

It takes a while for the ink to build up a nice layer on the block.

The ink dries quickly. Next time I will try covering the block with a damp towel when rolling up the brayer, and covering the mixed ink and brayer when printing.

Due to the tackyness of the ink it seemed to require more ink to cover an area then say more liquid inks like speedball. Though even with a little water it held the color fairly nice, a good value nonetheless.

I like the container size, price and for me they work well. I hand pull my prints and they look great. I should also say the non-toxic is the way to go. Consider it.

I agree with the reviewer who said this ink is great and safe to use with children. I teach private art lessons and this is the ink I will let my kids use. It's cheap, so I don't stress if they experiment with it. And they get terrific looking prints.

I agree with the reviewer who said the ink dries too quickly and makes Mulberry paper curl and tends to stick to the paper. I live in Utah and the ink dries very quickly here. You can freshen it up with water and get some interesting effects printing on damp paper, but that may not be the look you want. I wish Blick would sell an extender medium to go with these inks.

I agree with the reviewer who said the ink is satisfying for beginning printmakers but more advanced printers should use better quality brands (try Graphic Chemical Inks--which is a formidable sounding name but they have great products and terrific info available).

I don't totally agree with the reviewer who said the inks are not opaque. I have overprinted some items on top of black (but that was Speedball's black), so I would say Blick's are somewhat opaque, definitely not transparent. You can make the inks more opaque by adding white, but it will affect the color. If you want professional results, use professional quality inks (Graphic Chemical).

I would not recommend Speedball over Blick. You're just paying for the name.
