Blick Tempera Cakes provide concentrated, brilliant color in a convenient package. Simply moisten the cake with a brush, and paint as you would with an opaque tempera or a watercolor wash.
Compare the convenience of tempera cakes with liquid tempera. There is no spillage, no waste, and no overload of color when using tempera cakes. They are easier for a group of children to share, and easier to manage in a classroom.
Blick Tempera Cakes are extra large, measuring 2¼" × 2¼" × ¾" (about 6 cm × 6 cm × 2 cm). Each cake weighs over 4 ounces (113 g). That's enough color to last through many classroom projects!
Blick Tempera Cakes, like Blick's famous liquid temperas, are manufactured only with safe, non-toxic, natural ingredients, which makes them perfect for younger children.

We LOVE these paints!

Comments about Blick Tempera Cakes:
My elementary students really love these paints. I love them because they are easy to use, clean up, and produce vibrant colors. They are versatile because you easily control the colors being used. They dry fairly quickly and we have never had any paints to develop mold like some other tempera cakes we have used.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Good for experimenting!
from Charlottesville, VA
I used these with summer art camp students, to have them experience mixing their own paint (in a cost-effective way!). I set up stations for them to try grating the cake to get powdered pigment, then mixing with either egg yolk, water, or oil. This cake formula worked well with all of those and the kids learned a lot.I have only used them for that activity so far - just grating, not the whole cake.

painting oriental style works well with these paints

My budget could only handle the 6 color palette. The kids have to mix orange, brown , and purple. I use them for kinder and the black is a problem. I will order brown and purple to replace the white and black.
These are awesome!!! For all ages!

They have these at LACMA and my 4 year old daughter loves going there just to paint. I searched several nearby Blicks and none of them stock it. The ones I found elsewhere cost more. I bought a lot to give as gifts just to qualify for free shipping :-)

I purchased the same brand of tempera cakes 26 years ago for my son and I just purchased them again for several new little kids. The colors are opaque, vibrant and long lasting; great for many hours of spontaneous paint play and for learning how colors combine. The trays are sturdy and not the mess that liquid paint is for young artists.

How do I know what I'm getting?
By The Artist
I teach children and your dry tempera cakes are just the right thing. As a youth I remember Romney tempera cakes in their trays, it was fun. However, when ordering, I didn't realize the set I purchased was only the cakes without the trays, which I needed. So, I used aluminum foil muffin pans (large) and they worked fine, minus 3 cakes.

I am an art therapy graduate student, and my go to media is usually chalk pastel. However, I began to experiment with tempera cakes and couldnt wait to get myself a set. The set I ordered from DickBlick.com was affordable and high quality. I was afraid at first I wouldn't be able to find tempera cakes the quality my school had but these exceeded expectations. They were shipped to me quickly and I now have the ability to work on my art process at home as well as at school. The only thing I didnt like at first, was the fact I had to buy at least two sets instead of just one. But now, I have a backup set.

Long-lasting Tempera Cakes
These tempera cakes are great for teaching color theory and color mixing. They last a very long time, are easy to clean, and the colors are bold.
