Great easel, great price !
from Cody, WY
This is a beautiful easel and a terrific price. It is functional. My only problem is that I cannot raise it high enough to paint standing up, my fault for not checking into that. It is perfect if you are doing really large vertical works because the mast is very long, we have 10 foot ceilings and it is about 2 feet down from that at the highest point to paint standing, if you are short. If you like to sit it is OK. The assembly directions were OK, could have been a little more descriptive, it was only pictures and small pictures, if you haven't assembled anything lately you wouldn't know what to do with the tightening bolts. I still really like it, but wish I had thought about the tall mast before I bought.
Light Duty H-Frame Easel

I have been an amateur artist for 65 years and my studio is much smaller than I would prefer. This easel gives me the advantage of working larger in a minimum amount of space. As a retired cabinet and furniture builder I have several easels that I have built myself. This easel is extremely well built and I believe it will give me all of the service I want.
Light H-Frame Easel

Since I use the easel in a house with 8 foot ceilings, it would be nice if it could be a little shorter. The wood is Chinese quality and I would have preferred a better quality.Otherwise, the easel was easy to set up and is easy to move around the room to catch light.
Don't be fooled by the price

We have purchased three of these easels. I added casters to one and use it in the painting studio. The other two are in the figure drawing space we use weekly. This is a sturdy, beautifully finished and cleverly designed easel that is capable of holding more than 90% of the work that I have done in my career. The packaging held up to shipping. The assembly, using the non-verbal instruction sheet, was straightforward. The two screwdrivers needed for assembly are included. I have not found any other easel that comes close in value for the money.

Beauty, function, and price
By Charcoal is my life

I am taking up drawing and painting again after many years and began taking classes. I wanted a nice easel at home that I could use for practicing on large table paper. I read the helpful info on the Blick site about different kinds of easels and decided on an H-frame type for stability, and the Blick model in particular, for design and price. The clear instructions, organization of the connecting parts in separate zip bags, and the included tools made assembly easy. I liked the look of the finished product so much, I am using it near my living room area for the time being, where I set up my still lifes for practice. The height adjusts easily, it's sturdy, and the trays are well designed for my drawing materials. I have the mast extended almost to my ceiling, which is just high enough for how I want to work. I haven't tried to collapse it to move it upstairs to my office/studio yet, but it's about as heavy as the wooden easels I use in class. Overall, it's exactly what I was looking for, lovely design, and a great value.

Wanted something new that would work better for sitting as well as standing that was made out of wood in an H-Frame configuration. Will reserve my metal H-frame easel purely for standing/robust painting (was not designed for being used in a sitting position). For anyone who is curious, the preferred canvas size that will be used is 18"x 24".(Pros) With all sales and discounts the total was less than $70.00 and it really doesn't get much better than that. Once assembled its very nice. Looks great and its easy to adjust the height, tilt, etc. The unit is pretty stable. The tray portion is a desirable feature as well is the vertical adjustment mechanism. Looking forward to countless hours of traditional oil painting on this easel. (Cons) Like others have stated, the supplied instructions are a "1" from a scale from "1 to 10". Its better than having nothing and guessing right from step one. Use it as a rough guide and go with common sense in addition to taking your time. When assembling the back portion, the instructions do not properly detail the orientation of the guide rails that are milled into the vertical portions that are suppose to slide in the base portion. So I had to then go back and take it apart to get the sides flipped as needed. With that, it took 30 minutes start to finish to get the whole thing set up. Note that you are supplied you with a both a full sized Phillips and a Flat Head screw driver which is nice (no additional tools needed).(Splitting Hairs) I doubt this was the case with most others but the box it came in was in very bad shape. The bottom was not sealed and its amazing that all the pieces were still inside. Maybe this was a returned item or very carelessly handled (manufacturer, warehouse, deliver, etc)- who knows. No obviously damaged components. Just some negligible nicks which will not be noticeable. If this were a $600.00 unit then it may have been exchanged. But its 1/10th of that so its a non issue.
Excellent for the Price

I bought this easel for painting finishing touches. Once it arrived it came unassembled and was relatively easy to assemble. It even came with its own set of screwdrivers. After it was put together it was sturdier then i expected it to be. The only flaw I have noticed was once you set the bottom bar at a decent height to work with while standing. The easel has grown to 7.5 ft tall because the bottom bar is connected to the height bar. Which is not a big deal at all, just unexpected. Overall an unexpectedly sturdy easel at an excellent price.
Very nice easel
from Inwood, WV
I got this easel for a great price, as Blick was running a 20% off promotion. It is a very nice easel made of quality wood, and I'm sure it will last a long time. I do mostly smaller scale oil painting (usually 18x24 canvases or smaller), and this easel with its adjustable top and bottom canvas holder is perfect. It's called a light duty easel, but it weighs 20lbs and is quite sturdy. I can't imagine that I would ever need an easel that would qualify as heavy duty. I can use it standing or sitting, and it tilts both backward and forward. I appreciate the forward tilt feature, as I may wish to branch out into soft pastels in the future, and I won't have to purchase another easel. I was able to assemble the product by myself in about an hour. The instructions are a bit unclear for certain steps (especially step 3: the nuts for the bolts go into the back of the wood piece, not the top as shown in the diagram), but I was able to figure it out in a few seconds by looking at the photos of the finished product on the box. Some of the pre-drilled holes are slightly misaligned (like where you attach the pull tab to adjust the bottom canvas holder), but it wasn't to the point that I couldn't get the screws in. I find that many mass-produced products that require assembly often have the holes misaligned, and since my particular easel wasn't that bad, it didn't bother me. Overall, I'm extremely pleased with this purchase, as I would normally expect to pay well over a hundred dollars for an easel like this. The current price is great, but if you can get it at a discount during one of Blick's promotions, it's an absolute steal.
