the gesso is fine but the lid is made of thick plastic so its very hard to open. not looking forward to being frustrated everytime i have to pry off the lid. still have an old bucket so i will transfer over but i hate this type of closure in packaging.

This gesso is a great buy. It gives you more coverage than liquitex gesso and really does give a good surface to paint on with just two coats.

I've been using this product to prime homemade, archival hardboard panels. I put a coat of acrylic polymer down first, as a size to isolate/seal the hardboard from the acrylic primer. This acrylic primer definitely requires more than two coats to make a uniformly white surface on sized hardboard--it's more like five or six coats. For that reason alone, it's false economy to buy this product unless you're applying it to pre-primed canvases or something, where you don't have to "kill" the color of a dark surface as you do with hardboard. Plus, it's not a very enjoyable ground to paint on. I find it to be very absorbent, so it feels like painting on a chalkboard. I will use up the rest of my bucket, but will not purchase again. I really like the other Blick brand products I've tried (esp. their brushes), but this one is an exception.

I recently purchased the 'Studio' line of Acrylic Gesso and was surprised that there were no instructions on the plastic container. Just like acrylic paints or primer sold at Lowe's or Home Depot, you have to shake the container for *a couple of minutes* and then stir. If you just dump it out of the bucket without a healthy shake and stir then you are going to get a watery consistency. DB should include instructions on the container. I thought the shake and stir was common knowledge, but I'm often wrong.

After getting a workout shaking the gesso for 2+ minutes I opened the container and stirred it with the handle of a large brush. I immediately wrapped the brush handle in plastic wrap so it could wait until I had time to clean the brush handle in running water. I used a 4" foam roller to coat my raw/unprimed cotton canvas with about 2 cups of gesso and still had some left in the $0.99 tray I purchased from Harbor Freight.

Gesso needs 2 or more coats. My first coat was light, my second coat even lighter. I did do three coats because I sanded between coats.

All in all, this Gesso is good if you shake and stir...if you don't then, yeah, it's watery. The Titanium Dioxide white is as pristine as you can get and it is sandable. Great deal, especially when on sale.

I ran out liquitex student grade gesso, so I bought blick gesso...I thought I got a good deal...I was wrong. You get what you pay for. It's too watery and doesn't cover much. It's like non fat whip cream...liquitex student grade is superior than this...I am painting two 50x 40 inch canvas and I used more than half gallon and still not covering very well...it's cheap because it's half water...I will continue to shop at blick because they have the best deal in internet most of time but I never use their gesso again...sorry blick..

When I opened the gesso it had an inch of Gel on top... I mixed, mixed, and mixed some more, finally it began to look like "gesso". When I applied the gesso it felt slimy, and was very transparent, reminds me of Zinc white, a really bad quality Zinc White. It's not worth the price and now I need to order real gesso.

I recently finished a gallon of Blick's Master Gesso and just now bought Blick's Studio Gesso to save eight bucks and some change. Big mistake. I'm now in my fourth coat on hardboard and it still isn't covering very well. Very thin, watery consistency. Probably more cost-effective in the long run to buy the better brand.

I just purchased a gallon on sale in the store. I'm very happy with it. I did have to do a bit of mixing as the product had separated. I poured 1/2 into another container and mixed as the container was quite full. The resulting product had a smooth consistency that was easy to apply straight out of the container. It covered my canvas nicely, and was smoother than I expected. I will buy this again.

I used this gesso for the first time. I've only prepped five different paintings, but thought it had good consistency and coverage. The tooth seems to be smoother than I expected, but that's not a complaint, just an observation. So far, I give it a good rating especially for the price compared to other brands.
