I use Blick Panels all the time! They are nicely built – have a good working surface and the sides take stain really well (which is a nice option)! I have not used many other brands to compare these to (as I've been happy with Blick's). I do wish there were larger sizes to choose from, but this is a likely a panel/framing problem, not a Blick problem. I've found that Blick panels are hard to beat!

I use fronts and backs depending and I would like the backs to be a better finish because of their frontal exposure.

Also interesting observation of a first time user.
I ease the sharp edges so that they retain paint longer with some handling.

When I painted with acrylic it took several coats to get a finish not exposing the base material. the paint seemed to dry almost as it was applied! Soaking in immediately! Interesting (unlike canvas)
I like that they are square and true. and well constructed.

I wanted a "starter" panel for experimenting with products requiring a rigid substrate, i.e., Golden Crackle Paste, multiple acrylic gel layers, etc. I didn't want to invest in the archival Ampersand panels until I decided if I would be working on panel instead of paper or canvas.

I highly recommend the 3/4" panels for these purposes. They are sturdy and well made, and the price is right. I did additional priming with latex-based Kilz, just in case there might be SID later from the wood composition.
