Welcome to dickblick
The Simplon frame is beautiful in its simplicity. It's a perfect complement to oil paintings, prints, watercolors, photos or mirrors, in finishes to fit all your needs. The accented liner enhances the artwork placed inside. The frame width is 3-1/4" and features a 5/16" rabbet.
These beautiful, wood plein air frames in golds and silvers are hand-finished with the "Old World" technique of showing hand leafing lines between each individual leaf that reveals a thin black separation line.
Note — Hanging hardware not included.
Color Matching — We do our best to match the color of frames, both on our website photography and in our catalogs, but differences in technology may affect the appearance of the photo on your screen. You are entitled to return, for refund or credit, any frame that does not meet your expectations.
Frame Depth — The depth of a frame refers to the depth of the frame's rabbet (the cut-out area behind the frame's molding that holds your artwork in place). To find a frame that will accommodate your artwork, measure the depth of the artwork, including any matting or mounting materials, and order a frame with a depth that is, at a minimum, the same as that measured depth.
Frame Dimensions — Frames are sized by the opening, not by the outside of the molding. To determine the size of frame to order, measure the outside of your artwork, including mat, and order that size frame. The frame will overlap your artwork ¼" all the way around, so your artwork will fit nicely behind the frame's molding.
Open Back Frames — These frames are meant to be hung on the wall and are sold as just the frame face. They are not shipped with backing material, glazing material, or hanging hardware. The open back frames are commonly used for traditional profile stretched canvases.

Comments about Blick Simplon Plein Air Frames with Liners:
I ordereed these frames 3 times because I like black frames and the value is great but: 1st time they were damaged but barely usable - with compression dents at some of the corners. 2nd they seemed to have corrected the problem [compression]. 3rd time was one frame for a commission and it was unusable. I am sure the manufacturer new it was damaged and sent it anyway. The packaging was intact and the damage was not from shipping.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I'm rating it a solid value, even though I think frames in general are the most overpriced items on the planet. However, given the price of all the other frames, and grading on that pricey curve, this frame is a good one. It is made in China. I'm guessing the majority of frames are.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
A bit on the loose side
from Heathsville, VA
I purchased these for 9X12 oil paintings on board. There is enough "play" in the measurement that securing them in the frame was a challenge. The 9X12 frames will actually hold a 91/2 (or 9 1/4) X 12 1/2 (or 12 1/4)board much better. They are made in Mexico. But, once you figure out how to shim them into place and keep them there and you get them up on the wall, they look really good.
Frame enhances painting

I posted a photo of the framed painting in Facebook. U saw a friend the next day and she said 'that was a really nice painting you posted. And it was in a special frame, wasn't it?" The gold liner directs the eye toward the framed art and is especially effective with smaller paintings.

This is a good frame, some issues with quality of one frame out of many I ordered. Dick Blick customer service is sending a replacement. Thank you, you are so awesome!
Terrific Value for Great Plein Air Frames

Love these frames for my plein air paintings. They look expensive and are well made. Just wish they were available in 10" x 20". I buy many of the available sizes.

Beautiful Quality Frame

I am very impressed with the quality of this frame I bought from Dick Blick! I make a lot of frames and buy a lot of frames for my paintings. In the regular craft stores, the pre-made frames are a good deal, but you can't find certain sizes... I cannot afford custom frames from the "framing" companies, but I still need a nice frame for these paintings. Dick Blick has a wonderful variety of open back frames in such well made and attractive sizes that I am going to buy more!
I bought the same frames twice and they are perfect.

The black frames I purchased are perfect for the painting I am currently creating. They are the newest style.
Nice for the Price!

NOTE: IF Blick would offer mounting (to hold canvas/panels in) and hanging hardware as a complete package, this review would be 5 stars for sure!!! See pic and also note: This is a pic of an original acrylic in the Gold Simplon Econo with Liner. I am sorry to say that the lighting is dull, the frame is much better looking, shinier and more reflective in person, but at least you get a real example. :)It is often difficult to find just the right frame for an original work. The selection of Blick Plein Air and other frames is much better for the quality, selection, and price than most of the other "box" stores that are familiar to we artists. A good frame can dress and class up an original oil, acrylic or other work, and in my case I am using these to finish plein air and some studio pieces, both oils and acrylics and am very satisfied with the appearance and overall value! My only disappointment is noted above, as this leaves additional materials and steps that could be offered in "one-shot!" Yet, I would recommend these frames readily.
