Welcome to dickblick
The same top-of-the-line, professional-quality linen used for our Blick Premier Belgian Linen Stretched Canvases — now available in rolls!
We are proud to put the Blick Premier name on this fine grade Belgian linen canvas, boasting all the best qualities for an exceptional painting experience. It is quite simply the ultimate substrate for oil painting.
We start with an extremely smooth, 6.5 oz medium texture linen made in Belgium from the inner bark of the flax plant. Picked, pumiced, and woven by hand, these long fibers produce a strong, flexible, slightly stretchy material that has been known to last for centuries. Belgian linen is acknowledged to be the very finest in the world, following a tradition that dates back to the 1400s — and we would not settle for anything less when it comes to the Blick Premier brand.
This outstanding canvas is then imported to the USA where it is carefully primed by hand with three coats of oil based primer to a 10 oz finished weight. Meticulous sanding between the coats prevents peeling, flaking, or cracking.
The combination of fine-woven, flax-based fibers and expertly applied oil primer results in the ideal oil painting surface — colors seem to melt like butter with extraordinary smoothness and luminosity. This stable, archival ground resists cracking under temperature fluctuations or while re-stretching.
Blick Premier Belgian Linen Canvas is ideally suited to accept oil paint — however, it can also be used with egg tempera, casein, and some drawing media.

Comments about Blick Premier Belgian Linen Canvas Rolls:
I really like this linen for both the weave and the priming. Not too rough, not too smooth, and the primer is neither too absorbent or too slick. Just right for my landscape and portrait works.

oil primed Belgium linen
from kailua, hawaii
fine quality Belgium linen at a decent price. im using for portrait and figurative paintings and am very satisfied
Not suitable for egg tempera as stated!
Although this preprimed linen seems average in terms of similar products in it's class, it is not suitable for egg tempera as stated in the text for the product. The gesso is simply not absorbent enough. It may be fine for oil or acrylic.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comment on sizing
from McMinnville, OR
I just wanted to note that the roll is actually a little over 56 inches long, and there are holes about an inch from each end where it was probably tacked to do the priming. Since I am planning to glue to hardboard, I was at first a little dismayed, but when I noticed that Blick is only claiming 53 inch length, it is completely accurate. In fact, if you are planning to stretch and tack, you could arrange it to get more that the 53 inches advertised. Quality looks great on first examination!
Best for portraits

A must for serious portraits in oil colors.
