Welcome to dickblick
These pure white bristle brushes with naturally flagged ends provide a smooth continuous stroke for priming canvas, varnishing finished works, or employing glazing techniques.
Brush hair is permanently bonded in nickel-plated brass ferrules, so the bristles won't find their way into your painting. The short handles are lacquer-sealed to protect against moisture damage.

Easy Sketching Brush
from Los Angeles
Comments about Blick Mega Gesso Brushes:
I use these for rough sketching in oil. I like a scratchy brush to do this. They are also very inexpensive so almost disposable after a handful of uses. Good deal.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The Bristles Fall Out.
I'm just getting started painting and art journaling, so I didn't want anything expensive. I wish I would have spent a few more dollars on a different gesso brush, though, because after two months of use, the bristles are still falling out of this one, and they're difficult to pick out of the gesso.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Great Time Saver
An inexpensive brush which is much nicer for priming panels than the household painting brushes I had been using.
I wish I'd read the other reviews!
from Asheville NC
I wish I'd read all the other reviews before I bought this brush. I'm having the same issue as everyone else. I've been spending so much time picking brush hairs out of the gesso that I went right back to my synthetic brush. It may leave more prominent brush strokes in the gesso, but it's much better than having to constantly pick out the shedded hairs from the panels. Also, in general synthetic hairs might be better for gesso, since I generally have to wash out the brush between each coat. Natural hairs absorb water so it takes forever for the brush to dry out between layers. You're better off looking for a soft synthetic brush for gessoing. It'll last longer and won't absorb the water and cause gunking of the gesso.

shedding a problem
from Genoa, NV
This brush sheds so many bristles and I spend more time picking them out of the gesso than it takes to paint a canvas! I won't buy it again.

Terrible Brushes. Hair always falls out
By Kal A.
from Boston, MA
Terrible Brushes. I've used them 5 times to gesso canvases and panels and the hairs always fall out. At first, I thought that some will fall out and then it will act normal. But no, every time I use it, the hairs stick to the canvas and I end up having to pick them with a tweezer. I have no use for those brushes now.

When I bought this product, I was convinced that the hair from the brush would stay securely in the nickle plated sheath, however I was completely mistaken. When I applied my first coat of Gesso a few hairs fell out, I thought maybe they're just loose hairs from production and that that would be it. I waited for the layer to dry and, 1 hour later, applied another coat with the same results...
Merchant response: We are sorry to hear that you were not satisfied with the performance of our Mega Gesso Brush. With this, and any of our brushes, we recommend washing and drying the brush prior to use. Give a light tub on the hairs as you wash and try to help remove any stray loose hairs. I would purchase something else...
from Phoenix, AZ
I purchased this brush to gesso canvas with. The claim in the description of -"Brush hair is permanently bonded in nickel-plated brass ferrules, so the bristles won't find their way into your painting." - is just not true. After my first coat, I thought, "ok it lost some bristles on first use", but by my third coat, it was worse and I stopped using it. It may work for other applications, but who wants to pick hair off your canvas for fifteen minutes after each coat of gesso...
Merchant response: To help minimize shedding, be sure to wash and dry your brush before first use. As it is drying, lightly tug on the bristles to ensure there aren't any loose hairs. If you still find your brush is losing too much hair, give us a call at 1.800.723.2787.
