I got these to experiment with my new oil pastels. The gesso coating takes acrylic toning colors like a champ and has exactly the right amount of tooth for my liking. The portrait linen-ish texture holds my Sennalier 0il pastels well and gives some cool painterly effects when the sticks are lightly applied over previous layers. Oh, and the price is SOooo right...!!! Happy art geekette here.

The gessoed surface texture is surprisingly nice. It is an economical, high quality product that is ready to go. It would seem to be much more archival than a cheap canvas panel. Artists have long painted on hardboard -- but the canvas textured gesso really takes the paint nicely. And I don't have to do any prep work -- no priming, no gluing canvas to the panel. I've been pleased so far. I'm going to take a few plein air painting and see what I think, but I've been happy with my first few paintings on this surface. It makes me wish they offered larger sizes -- at least 12x16.
