I am a professional portrait artist and work primarily in pastel. There is a Blick outlet in our area and while making my other purchases, I came across these pastels..........have been using them ever since.

I work on a sanded paper, the paper grabs a lot of pastel and I go through them quickly. This pastel is firm enough to get the edges I need while soft enough to layer and layer.

I am a full-time professional artist who wants to use quality, lightfast materials without spending a fortune. I find Blick pastels work extraordinarily well with the other brands I use such as Rembrandt, Mt. Vision and Art Spectrum. All the Blick colors that I have purchased are smooth and beautiful. I am getting superb results with them. Give them a try!

The good: Blick Soft Pastels are most likely okay for K-12 use. In sets, Blick offers a very wide range of hard to find or hard to make, unique colors. Pricing for the quality is acceptable.

The bad: When you make a mark with a Blick 'Soft' pastel, it is impossible to smear with a finger or tool to the degree that other soft pastels are capable. These pastels are just too waxy and hard to be considered adequate or soft enough for my professional use. Some of the colors are so hard they tend to skid across the working surface. I was hoping for so much more versatility with this product. If the manufacturer used less binder and/or more pigment in the solution the result would be a softer, smoother stick that would allow for direct layering of marks and softer blending. I will definitely purchase other brands instead or continue to make some of my own from now on.

These are excellent quality soft pastels for the price! Most use lightfast pigments, they're really beautiful, and they're just a joy to work with. Pay no attention to the reviewers who complain that some of the sticks are inconsistent in texture. This is an economy brand -- what did you expect? At this price, it's easy to overlook a few minor inconsistencies here and there. I will most definitely be purchasing more Blick pastels.

For the low price, these pastels are really good. They are creamy, have very good coverage, not so dusty, and don't break as easily as more expensive brands. I wish they made even more colors!

These are great. They are a bit creamier than faber castell and some drier varieties don't mark over these to blend as well and when I broke them in half for arranging in my art case many fractured and I lost valuable fragments in the break. The colors are very good and as they are a little creamy the colors go on so nicely and I tend to think they don't create quite as much dust. For the price I can forego the crumbs I lost in the breaks and will definitely buy again!

I am generally dissapointed with this product...the feel is different from pastel to pastel....the darks feel very hard, almost like an oil pastel, the lights are much better and have that buttery feel as advertised...the mid value range wander all over the place...they are useable for under painting but I would not purchase them again.

These are a bit harder than Sennelier soft Pastels but definitely not as hard as Nupastels. The colors are nice and the price is good. I would buy more.
