Ok set, especially for beginner

Comments about Blick Artists’ Soft Pastels Sets:
Bought the large set of half sticks to fill in my color choices. Set seemed to be light to medium dark in colors. Sticks are hard in texture and not easy to use. I had to sand each stick to remove hard bits from ends. I now only use it for underpaintings.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I use them for landscapes and florals. Not oily feeling like Rembrandts with a beautiful color selection, reasonably priced and non-toxic. Most pastels have warning labels on many of the colors, even many student grade pastels. These do not, so I feel comfortable using them. While many pastels with the most toxic pigments are lovely, they are not worth the risk for me.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Beautiful selection of colors, well-packaged and nice to work with.

Got these for my 5 year old, his first oil pastels. He made a black volcano spewing red lava and smeared smoke and ash. He did art in a new way bc of good new materials. Thanks!
Good and safer

What I was looking for was pastels that were clear of labels indicating warnings from California P65. These seem to be non toxic and the best of clear health warnings. That means a lot to me. I know pastels have been used for a hundred years just the way they are. But I think of how cigarettes were once an Okay thing too. We didn't have the technology to test how these things were harmful. Nothing is perfect but I like these pastels. They are a good price, well packaged, and they are soft enough. I know there are others that are way chalkier and softer for blending but I don't like the Cancer label and higher price.

I got into pastels about a year ago. Bought a cheap cheap set and immediately knew that wasn't gonna work. Bought a set of Mungyo which was my main pastel for months. I've also got some Rembrandt and Unison. Rembrandt feels too much like oil pastels for me to really like them. The Blick set I bought is perfect. It is not too chalky and not too oily. I would recommend these for anyone doing pastels. Price is good and the selection of colors for when I need to replace or expand is plentiful.

Most of the pastels are very soft and an excess of pigment crumbles off of the stick while applying. The sticks are not uniformly made, so some don't lay onto the paper evenly. Some of the pastels are harder. There was a lot of gray in this set.
Merchant response: Thank you for sharing with us! Pigments, unique by nature, typically respond differently to binders which results in varying levels of hardness. Some may be very soft and crumbly, while others are harder or less creamy. We have reviewed our images and color listings and confirm they are accurate, so you can see exactly what’s inside each set! Amazing pastels andevenbetter value
I just recently got into pastel painting and I originallyboughta set ofrembrandts, and I was underwhelmed. I tried out sennelier and mungyo gallery handmade pastels, and I loved them so much more than the rembrandts that Iwas going to buy a largeset of senneliers andsom accent colors of the mungyos. However, I rightbefore I was going to purchase the expensive set of sennelier pastels I stumbled upon a glowing review for Dick Blick artist pastels, that said that you must try them, so being a good boy I bought the 20 half-stick sampler, and fell in love! They are much softer and more velvety than the rembrandts and they are easy to blend and, more importantly layer. The colors are vibrant and alive! They are notas soft as sennelier, but I kinda like that because they are more easily controled. So I bought the wonderful 120 half-stick and full stick set, which arrived in pristine condition, and never looked back. I love the color range in the set and I can finnally get into the more serious pastel work that I wanted :) In short I would highly recomend this set!

Great first full pastel set
By Happy Customer
The pastels arrived in a timely manner and were undamaged. Upon using the pastels I will agree with some reviews that the consistency of the pastels change with color and tone. In general the darker colors have a more brittle consistency. This does not affect the usability of the product and for the price point is not unexpected. However it can be off setting while using the product when large chunks of the pastel stick fall off. Again in general this is not a problem and is to be expected for this dry medium. Overall this is a good product delivering a full range of colors for an outstanding price. Great for a first full set, because as you use the set you can replace colors individually with open stock of a more expensive brand. Essentially building a personalized pastel collection of favorite brands on a shoestring budget.
