First time user of pastels.
from Kingsley, PA
Comments about Blick Artists’ Soft Pastels Sets:
This was my first time working with pastels. I bought the Blick brand because of the price and was extremely happy with it. I took a class and the instructor let us use some of her more expensive pastels but found the Blick brand to be just as workable.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Blick artist soft pastels set half sticks
from Elk Grove, CA
A nice variety of colors. Maybe too many 1* values? 2* values would be better I think. The 1* values start to all look like white. At least I know I won't run out of white too quickly I guess with these other light value options. Colors look a bit ordinary compared to a student grade pastel set I've tried during college. Sometimes normal colors are what one needs to get the job done though. The magic happens not from the swatchs, but from the blending and layering.

really great pastels
By Tommy D.
from Philadelphia PA
I like these pastels because they are softer than regular oil pastels, yet don't crumble. I can make precise lines or add layers of color. The box is lined with soft material so they don't break in shipment. I only give them 4 stars because I'm relatively inexperienced with pastels and only have used maybe 4 brands.
Good beginners set
from Iowa City, IA
A great variety and quality for those starting out in pastels on a budget. A good variety of colors, including darks. But you may want to supplement with additional darks.

Ok set, especially for beginner
from Warwick, RI
Bought the large set of half sticks to fill in my color choices. Set seemed to be light to medium dark in colors. Sticks are hard in texture and not easy to use. I had to sand each stick to remove hard bits from ends. I now only use it for underpaintings.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
I use them for landscapes and florals. Not oily feeling like Rembrandts with a beautiful color selection, reasonably priced and non-toxic. Most pastels have warning labels on many of the colors, even many student grade pastels. These do not, so I feel comfortable using them. While many pastels with the most toxic pigments are lovely, they are not worth the risk for me.
