Painting in a small format is very liberating. You can learn rapidly by doing many small paintings to explore new ideas and methods, without the cost of materials needed for larger studies. If you succeed, you have a painting that is just as good as a big one. Your failures will small and inexpensive, so you won't feel bad when things go wrong. There are also practical reasons to create small paintings, such as lack of a studio, limited free time for painting, a disability that precludes large heavy projects, etc. Or, you may simply enjoy the challenge of editing and focusing your work.

If you are trying to make a living by selling art, small paintings can be attractive to more buyers. They cost less than big ones, and buyers won't have to worry about finding space in their homes to display your work. This book covers most of what you would need to know to get started, and introduces the thought process for scaling down your paintings and getting the most impact from a smaller picture. (This can be applied to work in any medium, not just the ones shown in the author's demos). Like me, you may find that painting smaller works is exactly what you always wanted.
