Baltic Birch Panels are popular with artists because of their firm, smooth surface, neutral color, strength, and affordable cost.
The smooth, sanded surface and edges on these Baltic Birch Panels make them ideal for detailed work. They also can be used with oil, acrylic, and encaustic paints — and they're a great surface for mounting prints, canvases, collages, and other mixed-media artworks.
Baltic Birch Panels are available in a variety of popular sizes, including square sizes, in convenient packs of five panels. Each panel measures 1/8" (3 mm) thick.

Extra work needed.

Comments about Fox Haase Baltic Birch Panel Group Packs:
I use birch panels for oil painting and usually buy from another vendor. I bought Dick Blick's because they were cheaper. However I found that the Dick Blick panels were rougher and needed an extra coat (3 total) of Shellac on the painting surface and more sanding than the panels I usually buy. Some of the edges were cracked from the saw and the edges were rough. Will not buy again because of the extra work.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Exactly what I wanted
from New York
The panels were sanded, not splintery or rough and had been seasoned well enough that they hardly bowed while being primed. I use them for acrylic and tempera paintings. They provide a smooth, rigid surface without the slickness of Masonite.

I had hope to use these panels to test paints but in the initial prep of sealing both sides they wrapped. I them put them in press to flatten them out. That did not work. They ended up in garbage.
Good teachin surface

I use this to teach colored pencil drawing on wood. It is an intro to using the pencil for decorating furniture and doing trompe l'oeil images. It has an even grain that takes the pencil very well and is a good size for beginners to work with.

It was disappointing that the boards warped before I could get them sealed.

Took gesso and sanding well. Great surface.

Great product, maybe I didn't read the description well enough or could be mentioned that it's a solid piece versus having it framed in the back to hang.
An Interesting Alternative
from New York, NY
I really like this stuff! The Ivory is my fave, although Holbein has a very impressive line of colors. My other favorite is the Mint Green. The combination of gouache and acrylic makes this durable and flexible while still providing full coverage and opaque color, but it can also be mixed with other paints. The only thing to keep in mind is that although it's gouache, it dries like acrylic, so if you have a blob on your palette, you can't reconstitute it with water the way you can watercolors or traditional gouache. That's not a bad thing, just something to remember so you don't waste paint.
You Can't Go Wrong with Baltic Birch

I'm always looking for archival quality materials from the paint I use to the supports I paint on.Baltic Birch is a solid, reliable painting support. These panels are well-made, perfectly flat, and have performed up to expectation. In fact, the only way they could be more pleasing would be to have beveled edges!
Lightweight, economical DIY painting panels
I finished these panels with several layers of matte spray primer on one side and clear spray varnish on the other to create gorgeous, light-weight oil painting panels. These are a good deal and the varnished wood backs really look nice. I use them for plein air studies. They do need additional sanding before spray painting on the wood side.
