Balsa Foam is an amazing plastic foam that carves like butter and paints like wood. It's ideal for sculpting and model making because it can be carved, chiseled, sawed, textured, or embossed with sharp-edged detail.
Like balsa wood, it accepts virtually any kind of spray or brush-applied paint. Use a water-based finishing medium to seal the foam and harden the surface. Unlike other plastic foams, Balsa Foam does not expand, contract, or warp at temperatures below 350°F (177°C). It has a density of approximately 5 lb per cubic foot.
Printing/Relief Blocks Class Pack
40 blocks, 4½" × 6" × ½" (11 cm × 15 cm × 1 cm). An ideal size for both relief sculpture and block printing.
Project Squares Class Pack
48 squares, 3" × 3" × ½" (8 cm × 8 cm × 1 cm). For small projects from ornaments to fabric stamps.

Students Love These
By Charmed Art

Comments about Amaco Balsa Foam:
Been using these for years with my students and they have achieved great success and confidence - a great beginning sculpture substrate. The only downside is the dust - it's relatively irritating because it's like fine, scratchy sand, and you do NOT want to get it in your eyes, but it's easy to do because the powder sticks to your arms and hands and faces do get brushed...
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Years ago my son's art teacher gave me some of the balsa foam to try. I loved using it! For years I searched for it and last year I persisted and found yall sold it. I didn't know if it was the same product I used before. I ordered just a few to try out. I am so glad it's the same as years ago. I just love working with it! I have created a few intricate pieces and have been commissioned to do two custom pieces. I hope you like the way they came out! I know I do!

I used the product to teach bas relief to groups of students at a shelter. They experimented with leather tools, with clay tools, and with styluses. They found the medium intriguing and created a variety of art pieces.

I have been searching for this foam for years. I am so glad I found it. I have had many artists asking about it. If all goes well, I will be ordering a lot more and more artists will be also.

Excellent mixed media toy!
from Fairfax, VA
This product can be shaved to create snow-like textures. It can be cut and shaped in any direction. One thing I found this time is that you can actually impress items into the surface and make a mold of sorts. The only bad thing about it is the dust which can irritate eyes and makes the place a mess! I continued to vacuum each time I used it and it was fine.
Good carving material for kiddoes
By Museum Dude

I use this material in summer camps at a fine arts museum in East Texas. It works best for kids 10-12; younger kids than that lose interest too quickly and the blocks are too small for older kids. For that age group, though, it's wonderful for learning carving techniques. I usually give each child two blocks, one for learning the material and one for making sculpture. The only drawback is the dust it creates, although it is much lower than other foams. It's also a little pricey, but a good medium. I recommend it!

Good for kids, but watch the dust
Used this in an elementary classroom setting. Easy to carve and paint! One drawback: the fine, powdery dust from carving can sometimes get in kid's eyes. I ordered safety glasses to keep the dust out of everyone's eyes and gave plenty of warnings to the children not to rub their eyes while carving. Worked great!
