Art of the Twentieth Century Series

Art of the Twentieth Century is a multi-volume project that is distinguished by its innovative style and format, with each volume containing narrative text and a full index arranged chronologically by artistic period.

This monumental art reference series offers a complete and up-to-date survey of the major movements and art phenomena of the 1900s and the first years of the new millennium in an original interdisciplinary analysis of artistic culture. It provides a vast source of information, an extraordinary repertory of images, enriched fact-finding windows, and technical information compiled by experts.

The first volume in the series highlights the artistic situation at the beginning of the last century and explores the different artistic choices taken in the search for modernity and of art as a total experience.

Subsequent volumes explore the diverse world of artistic production between the two World Wars, the contemporary period that occurred at the halfway mark of the 20th century, and the events of 1968 to 1999 that paved the way for profound social transformations and caused artists to experiment with "visual languages."

Volume I, The Avant-garde Movements 1900–1919 — This volume examines avant-garde movements in the years between 1900 and 1901 — the Fauves, the Cubists, and others — both as complex syntheses of 19th century artistic culture and as alternatives to the traditional language of figurative art. The period examined starts with emblematic moments such as the Great Exhibition in Paris, which opened a century of technological marvels, and closes with the end of the initial phase of the Dada movement and the foundation of the Bauhaus school.

Valerio Terraroli is professor of history of contemporary art and history of modern decorative arts at the University of Turin. He is the author of numerous essays and volumes on art and the decorative arts, including the Skira Dictionary of Modern and Decorative Arts (2001).

Authors — Edited by Valerio Terraroli, with contribution by Gabriella Belli, Carlo Bertelli, Germano Celant, and Ester Coen.

Hardcover. 456 pages. 8" × 11" (20 cm × 28 cm).

Volume II, The Artistic Culture between the Wars 1920–1945 — This volume analyzes and presents the diverse world of artistic production between the two World Wars, beginning with the environment that took shape in the immediate wake of World War I.

The Artistic Culture Between the Wars is an interdisciplinary survey of this period's changing artistic climate that included the re-emergence of a figurative approach (the New Objectivity), and the evolution of an avant-garde that is now historicized by its second-generation artists.

Also considered are phenomena such as Surrealism, the change in taste from Art Deco to Novecentismo, and the expression of the totalitarian regimes during the outbreak of World War II. The book's chronological boundaries stretch from the birth of the Dada in Germany to the birth of Abstract Expressionism (1943-1945).

Hardcover. 448 pages. 8" × 11" (20 cm × 28 cm).

Volume III, The Birth of Contemporary Art 1946–1968 — In this book, the authors examine the halfway mark of the 20th century — what many would already describe as The Contemporary Period.

Valerio Terraroli is professor of the History of Contemporary Art and History of Modern Decorative Arts at the University of Turin.

Authors — Valerio Terraroli, Gabriella Belli, Carlo Bertelli, Germano Celant, and Ester Coen.

Hardcover. 448 pages. 8" × 11" (20 cm × 28 cm).

Volume IV, Neo-avant-gardes, Postmodern and Global Art 1969-1999 — This volume examines the events of 1968–1999 that paved the way for profound social transformations and created a new feeling toward individuals' behaviors and the relations between them, including a new consciousness of the body and of social and political dynamics.

During this period, while seeking new means of expression, artists experimented with visual languages that were as far away as possible from any tradition of painting, sculpture, and assemblage that predated the 1960s.

This volume looks back over these phenomena with the help of a spectacular gallery of images, which show the wide variety of artistic proposals made during these 30 great years.

Valerio Terraroli is professor of the History of Contemporary Art and History of Modern Decorative Arts at the University of Turin.

Author — Valerio Terraroli.
