The perfect pocket sketch journal
from Vancouver, WA
Comments about Art Alternatives Sketchbooks and Journals:
A great little sketchbook that is well made and can take the wear and tear of use. The paper stock is perfect for pen and pencil drawing. A slight tooth but not so much that it ruins a fine line.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This notebook is incredible. It fits easily in my pocket and is not cumbersome. I use this for quick sketches in the field office lobbies and while riding in the van. I take short notes for appointments and to do and shade them into drawing when complete. Wonderful notebook.

I've been waiting a LONG time for Art Alternatives to find its way to Blick. This was the cheapest but most decent quality of supplies you could find in my school store. These sketchbooks were always a fast mover, more specifically, the 8.5" x 5". This sketchbook lives in my purse. I have a bigger sketchbook by a different brand because the paper quality for this one is okay. A little smooth but rather thin. I've gotten nice lines on it, but I wouldn't really recommend it on bigger sizes. These play nicer as portables. For media I use mechanical pencil and ballpoint pen. The ink on ballpoints has held up very well with no smudges and doesn't bleed onto the next page. However since the paper is thinner you can see even pencil on the backside, so double-sided sketching is a no-go.The back also includes a pocket similar to Moleskines, a detail I forgot about until very recently.
Great sketch books!

I've tried tons of these types of sketch books, and this is my favorite. Very smooth paper. However, FOUNTAIN PENS WILL BLEED ON THIS PAPER. I haven't found one of these style sketch books from any brand that could handle one yet.
High Quality and Of Good Use
from North Carolina
I purchased the Lined Journal 3.5x5.5 and was quite impressed. This is a nice quality alternative to those of us who think Moleskins are overpriced. I use my purchase as an Art Journal: recording thoughts, reflections, notes from workshops and art critiques. Overall I'm very happy with the notebook. I love the elastic closure, and the paper holds up under almost every pen I've used.
You can find better
from Carrollton, MS
The cover feels good in my hand but that's it. The paper feels and looks cheap. I bought the bigger one and the heavier weight paper and even the heavier weight paper is cheap feeling. I do like that the paper isn't slick feeling. In the larger one, the paper wasn't cut so that it completely separates. Both have black and other colored flecks on the pages throughout. The flecks are small but they are on at least half of the pages. They may be not fully processed pieces of bark or other particles of the material from which the paper is made. There isn't enough to make me think that they are supposed to be there though. I keep wanting to wipe the "dirt" off the page.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
good for the price
I am just starting to use it, and while the paper is very nice for regular drawing, I was disappointed to find that the paper began to warp when I used india ink (applied via dip pen as well as thin brush), and considering that this is advertised with a dip pen, I was under the assumption that it might hold up to the ink a bit better.Having said that, it's a very good value, the price is great for what you get, the cover is nice and it definitely looks like it costs a lot more than it does. For everyday drawing and such, this is a very very nice pad. I especially like the band it has to keep it closed.

Cheap but durable and reliable.
i find it hard to pay extra for paper, when i love attacking it with all sorts of mediums. from blood to the sweat from my glands this paper resists all and keeps a constants reminder of what i was feeling at that time in the visual forms i portray upon it at any given moment. these sketchbooks are well worth the money and far cheaper than the other brand. buy it and have fun drawing
