Not realy opaque
By crafty dabbler
from seattle, WA
I've used a few student grade sets of gouache, including Reeves and Pelican and W&N designer gouache, and so far these are the worst, which was really disappointing because I keep seeing them in photos of artists I like studios. No matter how thickly applied, I can't get anything near opacity from them, and they streak pretty badly compared to any tube gouache I've used, student or pro. They feel like a waste of money.Don't be fooled by the pretty colors peeking out at you, about all these are good for is sitting on your desk as a pretty prop. I've also used the pelican pan opaque colors, and those are much smoother and opaque. I added a color swatch I did with the Angora set to show streaking. Also there is a line of color swatches of the super cheap Reeves brand tube gouache along the bottom, it's hard to see in the pic, but the Reeves is a good deal more heavily pigmented.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

pans after being wet, chalky surface
Merchant response: Student Grade Gouache paints are all created with additives that create opacity. As with nearly any paint, a pan is going to give you less intensity than a tube because you are getting a higher level of concentration in the tube which is already fluid. A fair comparison would be to allow the tube to dry in a pan, then use the same amount of water to wet and paint a swatch from both. Just an amateur experimenting with watercolor for my handmade cards. I wanted some different colors, and these fit the bill. saturation is good, and the case is very handy for travel.
Perfect color choice easy to travel with
from Roseville, Ca
This set of pan water colors works well for a quick session or the "I have lots of time" session. It is also very handy to take with me when traveling. The color palette is perfect, good choices. A jar for water, my book of paper, a few brushes and I am set. My 14 year old granddaughter was thrilled with her set.I am very pleased with this purchase.
10 Years Later...
from Helena, MT
I bought these nearly 10 years ago when I was starting out and an art student. The colors are excellent, the price is unbeatable for what you're getting, and nearly 10 years later the paintings I created with it and these pans are still going strong. I've now handed these paints down to my four-year-old and they are perfect for him.
Intense colors and great variety.
