Lead-free Amaco Velvets are opaque underglazes which have the appearance of velvet when left unglazed.
Velvets will become opaque after three coats. When glazed with transparent matte glaze they will assume a soft, satin finish. The colors will intensify when covered with a clear transparent gloss glaze, but will lose their matte surface quality.
Velvets fire true to color from the jar and may be intermixed with other colors. They may be brushed on mature fired bisque before applying a covering glaze. These underglazes are safe for spray application. Velvets tolerate a wide firing range. Fire to Cone 06-10 (1855°F–2381°F, 1013°C–1305°C).
Colors can be assorted by size for quantity pricing.
Some colors vary at higher temperatures. Please refer to the Resources tab of this page to download a PDF of Amaco's color variation chart for colors at Cone 5 and Cone 10.
Colors are not dinnerware safe unless applied and fired under Amaco LG-10 Clear glaze.

Mix with other underglazes
By Provincetown pottery
Comments about Amaco Lead-Free Velvet Underglazes:
What's great about the velvet underglazes is they can be mixed with other colors, to create other color blends. Dilute with water if needed.

I'm really happy to have these product available to me me via the internet. I love Amaco Underglazes and use them in more os my work. The price is reasonable as it is the suggested retail price, shipping is okay it takes about a week or so to get my packages. The only thing that would make it better is if it was quicker shipping but it's really reasonable.

Good results, always reliable, and lots of choice.

I use these underglazes in making tiles and in painting small sculptures. I use them for anywhere from Cone 06 to Cone 6 and find they give reliable, good results in all of this range. I also really like it that I can mix colors to get something custom-made. And there are plenty of color choices to start with! They cover well and I have little problem with brushstrokes as long as I do a couple of coats and work evenly - but this is true of every glaze and underglaze I've ever used. I am very happy with the results I've gotten and I've used these for years.
