Lead-free Amaco Velvets are opaque underglazes which have the appearance of velvet when left unglazed.
Velvets will become opaque after three coats. When glazed with transparent matte glaze they will assume a soft, satin finish. The colors will intensify when covered with a clear transparent gloss glaze, but will lose their matte surface quality.
Velvets fire true to color from the jar and may be intermixed with other colors. They may be brushed on mature fired bisque before applying a covering glaze. These underglazes are safe for spray application. Velvets tolerate a wide firing range. Fire to Cone 06-10 (1855°F–2381°F, 1013°C–1305°C).
Colors can be assorted by size for quantity pricing.
Some colors vary at higher temperatures. Please refer to the Resources tab of this page to download a PDF of Amaco's color variation chart for colors at Cone 5 and Cone 10.
Colors are not dinnerware safe unless applied and fired under Amaco LG-10 Clear glaze.

Best selection of colors

Dick Blick has the best price on Amaco underglazes plus free ship. I buy large sizes and they last for a long time.
Love these underglazes
Underglazes open up so many options for painting effects on ceramics. I find the colors in the Amaco underglazes to be bold and strong.
These velvet underglazes have not let me down. I'm on my third batch of small 2 oz containers. I work kind of big, so these are almost testers for the size I work in, I'm ready to invest in the bigger sizes. In a matte finish, these brush on nice, if they dry out, they reconstitute over night really nice, and give nice bright results. I have had some beautiful colors fired at cone 5/6. Aso, covered in clear glaze, they do look a bit like a glaze and they might run a little bit, get moved around very nice.

Amaco Velvet Underglazes are one product I can rely on to get consistant results every time. Recently I use them on a tile mural that was part of a commission. The result was exactly what I wanted and lokked awesome.I only wish they had a larger variety of colors.
Have used Amaco Velvet Underglazes for over a decade!
from Ellensburg, WA
I'm a professional ceramics artist and use Amaco velvet underglazes over 04 bisque (usually two coats for pretty solid coverage -- varies with the color). It has good, solid coverage, works well with clear cover glazes. Sometimes certain colors (such as "amethyst and black) need to be knocked back a little with a little of another color (the amethyst) or diluted a bit (black), or I get blistering with the clear cover-glaze. Over the years I have found the product to be extremely consistent -- with one exception: The color "purple" was changed a few years ago to a muddy-looking something-or-other, and I've been quite unhappy with it -- and don't buy it anymore after then change, either. That's the only reason I didn't give these underglazes a solid 5. I've tried many other underglazes, and I have found this one, although not perfect -- Amaco, please change the purple back to the way it was -- overall the best.

Mix with other underglazes
By Provincetown pottery
What's great about the velvet underglazes is they can be mixed with other colors, to create other color blends. Dilute with water if needed.

Amaco ceramic underglazes stay put where applied, even when fired. They offer controlled designs and come in a variety of formats; liquid, semi-moist, pastel stick and pencil. With underglaze, you can achieve a wide range of effects and detailed lines that you can't get with regular glazes.
