Lead-free Amaco Velvets are opaque underglazes which have the appearance of velvet when left unglazed.
Velvets will become opaque after three coats. When glazed with transparent matte glaze they will assume a soft, satin finish. The colors will intensify when covered with a clear transparent gloss glaze, but will lose their matte surface quality.
Velvets fire true to color from the jar and may be intermixed with other colors. They may be brushed on mature fired bisque before applying a covering glaze. These underglazes are safe for spray application. Velvets tolerate a wide firing range. Fire to Cone 06-10 (1855°F–2381°F, 1013°C–1305°C).
Colors can be assorted by size for quantity pricing.
Some colors vary at higher temperatures. Please refer to the Resources tab of this page to download a PDF of Amaco's color variation chart for colors at Cone 5 and Cone 10.
Colors are not dinnerware safe unless applied and fired under Amaco LG-10 Clear glaze.

Underglazes that Pop!
from Central Coast, CA
Comments about Amaco Lead-Free Velvet Underglazes Classroom Packs:
I'm tempted to give these glazes a five-star rating but as this is my first experience with underglazes I have nothing with which to compare them. They applied easily to my greenware pieces and the colors really popped on a couple of different clay types, one light and one dark. A fellow artist borrowed them for bisqueware she was working on and felt that they were a little light, though a clear gloss application on top would have brought out more color. For my purposes, they met and exceeded expectations and were promptly delivered by Blick Art at a good value.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Ceramics teacher (high school)- Love this product!

My advanced level students use these to achieve vivid colors and painterly surface design on their ceramics. I love how they never drip!! You simply add clear glaze over them. My students love how you can use these underglazes before the bisque firing OR after.
Some of the Best Underglazes
The Velvet underglaze series by Amaco are some of the best out there! You can't go wrong with trying them out and great price!
I think amaco has set the standard
I really appreciate the quality of the product- using these underglazes means I get a smooth even finish. I think the set colour range is comprehensive and provides some good colour mixes if you want to extend the range by producing custom colours. I swear by it in a teaching environment. Never let me down yet.
I would buy this product over and over

Love these underglazes
Underglazes open up so many options for painting effects on ceramics. I find the colors in the Amaco underglazes to be bold and strong.
These velvet underglazes have not let me down. I'm on my third batch of small 2 oz containers. I work kind of big, so these are almost testers for the size I work in, I'm ready to invest in the bigger sizes. In a matte finish, these brush on nice, if they dry out, they reconstitute over night really nice, and give nice bright results. I have had some beautiful colors fired at cone 5/6. Aso, covered in clear glaze, they do look a bit like a glaze and they might run a little bit, get moved around very nice.
Amaco ceramic underglazes stay put where applied, even when fired. They offer controlled designs and come in a variety of formats; liquid, semi-moist, pastel stick and pencil. With underglaze, you can achieve a wide range of effects and detailed lines that you can't get with regular glazes.
