Quick Button Art

2005 Lesson Plans

If you're looking for an inexpensive, creative project that's easy to do with a group, this one is guaranteed to produce great results. Perfect for art fairs and carnivals, party crafts, scout troops and more. You can even use this project as a fund raiser or a creative way to make a nametag! Simply fill the top section of the Quick Button with paint, glitter, found objects, photos, flowers, fabric or paper scraps - anything flat - then, snap the back of the button on. Have plenty on hand, they always want to do more!

Grade Levels

K–12

Objectives

  • Students will design a wearable piece of artwork using various processes and materials
  • Students will create a collage that functions in a small, circular shape

Procedure

  1. Take the clear button front (without pin), place objects inside. Glue may be used if needed. You can make a basic collage or get creative. Some ideas:
    1. Create nametags by having letters available, either as computer printouts or cut from magazines. You can also create an interesting background inside the button, then write names over the top with paint markers as a final step (Sharpie 22100-)
    2. Use paint in small squeeze bottles (Blick Craft Paint, 00727-) and dribble inside the button. Once the back is snapped on, the paint is held inside
    3. Use small photos of famous paintings and artwork as part of the collage
    4. Cut circles from lightweight watercolor paper (Blick Student Watercolor Paper, 22" x 30" sheet, 10028-2152) using the front of the badge as a template. Paint with watercolors, watercolor pencils, etc.
    5. Make a nature-themed button, with flowers, leaves, clover, etc.
  2. Snap the back into the front, press around edges to make sure it's sealed
