Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater DVDs

John Sloan's New York

John Sloan's New York presents a unique perspective on New York and its people and also on the artist himself, who was captivated by the soul of the city. John Sloan began his career as a commercial newspaper artist in Philadelphia where he studied with Robert Henri. Following Henri to New York, Sloan joined a small circle of eight talented artists whose dissatisfaction with the dominating National Academy led to a protest exhibit in 1908, the emergence of a powerful movement for change in American art, and ultimately to the famous Armory Show of 1913. Robert Rauschenberg

Gerhard Richter: Landscapes

Gerhard Richter's abiding fascination with the allure and the rhetoric of landscape painting, and his brilliant reimaginings of the genre, are appraised in this survey of more than 40 years of painting. No genre has fascinated Gerhard Richter so consistently throughout his career as that of landscape. Ever since his softly overpainted Views of Corsica series of 1968–1969, the artist has revisited and reprised its possibilities, creating black-and-white townscapes based on newspaper pictures and amateur photographs, mountain and park scenes with heavy impasto, illusionistic seascapes in subtly gradated tones, and paintings worked with abstract overpainting. Frequently these paintings interrupt or quietly sabotage the transcendent horizon of the Romantic landscape, but the image presented is not exactly ironized as in other paintings of Richter's. "I felt like painting something beautiful" was the artist's response, when asked about the preponderance of landscapes in his works around 1970. Fifteen years later, Richter further elaborated that "my landscapes are not only beautiful or nostalgic, with a Romantic or classical suggestion of lost Paradises, but above all 'untruthful.' By untruthful I mean the glorifying way we look at Nature — Nature, which in all its forms is against us, because it knows no meaning, no pity, no sympathy ..." Richter's approaches to landscape are various indeed, yet uniquely and recognizably his. The first edition of Gerhard Richter: Landscapes was published in 1998. Golden Artist Colors Tint and Glaze Poster

With thousands of hours of paint research all on one page, the Golden Artist Colors Tint and Glaze Poster contains valuable comparative information about colors as they transform through tint and glaze mixing. It's a comprehensive reference that every painter can use. Here's how the poster was developed. The Golden laboratory wanted to create a systematic representation of paints drawn out to consistent tints (mixtures with Titanium White) and glazes (mixtures with clear medium). This exploration started with research on a few dozen colors conducted for the "Subtleties of Color" article in Just Paint 21. A few dozen colors turned into several dozen and finally 100 colors, each mixed precisely to create five tints from a 10:1 to a 1:10 paint-to-White ratio, and four glazes from a 1:1 to a 1:50 paint-to-medium ratio. These 900 paint mixtures were then drawn out to a precise thickness on test cards. From there Golden took spectrophotometer readings over White, and for the glazes and masstone Black. The 900 mixtures, plus the original 100 colors, became 1,500 unique color readings. Those readings have been translated into a 26" (41 cm) tall by 39"(99 cm) wide chart that includes the color names in English, French, German, and Spanish, as well as the pigment ID numbers and ASTM lightfastness ratings — along with the range of tints and glazes created by Golden. The Neutral Gray masstones were added over White and Black, making this a complete reference of the standard colors available in Golden Heavy Body colors. To overcome the limitations of regular four-color process printing, Golden found a special six-color process that elevates the richness of the printed spectrum in the Orange and Green range. While it's impossible to duplicate the unique color quality of a Cobalt Blue or a Cadmium Orange without using those pigments, Golden believes this printed version comes closer than could be imagined in a printed color chart. Unison Handmade Pastels

Over a decade ago, in the hills of Northumberland, England, artist John Hersey began hand-making his own pastels. Gently hand-rolled and air-dried, each stick is as much an organic sculpture as it is a tool. Look closely at a stick and you may see the fine lines and fingerprints imparted by the pastels' creator. Each pastel takes on the tapered shape of the bowl of the maker's palms. Hersey's unique color formulations contain only pure pigments in a cycle of related hues, instead of adding white or black to the colors. The result is intense, vibrant color application not muddied by the blending of colors. The color range is sublime overall and at moments astonishing. Unison's pastels contain very little binder, making them truly soft and smooth. Pastels measure approximately 2-1/8" long × 5/8" diameter (54 mm × 16 mm).
