Palettes and Mixing Trays

The traditional artist's palette, used with oils and viscous or heavy-bodied acrylics, is a flattened orb with an easy-to-clean surface. Rectangular shapes are also popular.

A covered palette keeps paint moist and workable between sessions.

The watercolor palette, also useful for acrylics and other waterbased media, is typically a rectangular or round dish with wells or indentations for mixing paint.

In the 1910s and 20s, before aluminum and plastic became inexpensive, palette cups were made of tin.
